Casinos in Macau posted year-on-year growth in September, but weather disruptions trimmed the upside.
Macau’s casino sector reported MOP 18.29 billion (c. US$2.3 billion) in gross gaming revenue for September 2025, a 6 % rise over the same month last year. The number, however, fell short of some analyst expectations, largely due to an unexpected break in operations caused by Super Typhoon Ragasa.
The storm forced authorities to shutter all casinos for 33 hours, as the city issued its highest warning signal (No. 10). From early on 24 September until 2am on 25 September, the gaming floors remained closed, a rare interruption that dealt a visible blow to monthly results.
The typhoon’s price: sequential drop
Compared with August, September’s revenue dropped 17.5 %, largely because of forced closure.
In August, Macau’s casinos generated MOP 22.16 billion, a post-pandemic high. The contrast with September is stark. The month-on-month decline shows how sensitive casino operations are to external shocks like weather.
Still, the year-on-year growth shows resilient demand in the region, despite the temporary disruption.
Year-to-date gains remain strong
Through nine months, Macau’s cumulative revenue reached MOP 181.34 billion, up 7.1 % over 2024.
That figure suggests that the broader momentum remains intact. Summer months were particularly strong: July and August posted year-on-year growth of 19 % and 12.2 %, respectively, helping absorb the setback in September.
Even with the storm-induced slowdown, the trajectory for 2025 still leans positive.
The premium story inside the recovery
High-value players are showing strength even when visitor numbers soften.
While total player counts dipped in some segments, reports show that premium-mass players increased their average bets. In fact, despite an 18 % drop in premium player numbers year-on-year, the average wager per remaining player rose considerably. That shift toward quality over quantity cushions the impact of lower footfall.
This phenomenon suggests that Macau’s recovery rests not just on volume but on how much each visitor spends.
Tax revenue adds to the picture
Gaming tax receipts continue to climb, reinforcing the fiscal value of Macau’s market.
In the first eight months of 2025, Macau collected MOP 61.88 billion (US$7.71 billion) in gaming taxes, marking a 5.3 % rise year-on-year.
This dynamic underscores how closely the city’s public finances rely on the performance of the casino industry, especially during a recovery phase.
Outlook: Golden Week could reshape October
All eyes now turn to October’s eight-day “super Golden Week,” expected to be a major revenue driver.
Historically, this holiday period pushes footfall and gaming spend. The industry anticipates a rebound that could outperform September and help make up for lost time.
If the week delivers as anticipated, it might set a stronger tone for the final quarter of 2025.
Why this matters
Macau’s strength lies in its resilience, but risk is never far behind.
The September results show that even in recovery, Macau’s casino industry remains vulnerable to unplanned events. A few days of closure can erase a significant portion of monthly gains.
But the broader story is firm: the licensed market is regaining ground, premium spending is showing resilience, and fiscal returns are climbing.
For operators, this means contingency planning is essential. Weather, regulation, or geopolitical shifts can all swing outcomes.
Also, the premium segment’s performance hints at how the market is evolving: volume alone won’t carry the recovery. High-spend players will matter more.
Linking to wider Macau trends
This September performance joins a series of strong results in 2025. Earlier, iGamingToday reported that brokers foresee double-digit growth for Macau’s 2025 GGR after meetings between Seaport analysts and major operators.
Additionally, Macau’s economic recovery is uneven beneath the surface, growth in tourism and gaming is solid, but other sectors face challenges.
