Light & Wonder Settles Dragon Train Dispute With $127.5 Million Payment to Aristocrat

Light & Wonder has agreed to pay Aristocrat Leisure Limited $127.5 million to resolve a prolonged intellectual property dispute that began after Dragon Train launched in 2023. The settlement, announced jointly by the two gaming suppliers early Monday morning, closes litigation in both Australia and the United States that Aristocrat initiated by alleging Light & Wonder had misappropriated its trade secrets and copyright works to develop the Dragon Train series and the related Jewel of the Dragon games.

IP Dispute Resolution Reshapes Light & Wonder’s Slot Portfolio

The compensation reflects Aristocrat’s core claim: that Light & Wonder used Aristocrat’s proprietary math information, the algorithmic foundation that determines how slot games function, without authorization. Light & Wonder acknowledged in ASX filings that certain Aristocrat math information was indeed used in developing both Dragon Train and Jewel of the Dragon. Rather than continue litigation, the company agreed to permanently halt the commercialization of these games globally and to make the best efforts to remove existing installations from casino floors.

Light & Wonder is also committed to destroying all documents containing the disputed Aristocrat math information and copyright works and agreed not to use that material going forward. The settlement extends beyond just Dragon Train and Jewel of the Dragon. The two companies established confidential procedures for addressing potential issues involving Aristocrat math in certain existing Light & Wonder hold and spin games, as well as hold and spin games still under development. That provision addresses a specific concern Aristocrat raised during the litigation; Light & Wonder had been ordered by a Nevada court to produce math models for its hold and spin titles, creating exposure across a broader product portfolio.

Aristocrat’s legal claims in both Australian and US jurisdictions will be dismissed following the settlement.

Intellectual Property at the Center of Gaming Business

According to Trevor Croker, CEO and Managing Director of Aristocrat, protecting intellectual property is key to the company’s overall strategy. In addition, Trevor stated that Aristocrat supports fair competition but will continuously protect its intellectual property rights at all times. He noted that as a company built on ideas and innovation, intellectual property represents vital assets created by creative and technical teams. Croker highlighted that Aristocrat had already secured a preliminary injunction in September 2024, at which time the court acknowledged Light & Wonder had managed to develop Dragon Train by using Aristocrat’s trade secrets without investing equivalent time and resources.

The financial settlement underscored the preliminary injunction’s significance. A court’s recognition that Light & Wonder gained a competitive advantage through misappropriation provided Aristocrat leverage in settlement negotiations, ultimately leading to the $127.5 million figure.

Light & Wonder Attributes Problem to Former Employee

Light & Wonder CEO Matt Wilson described the situation as stemming from a former employee who inappropriately used Aristocrat math without the company’s knowledge and in direct violation of internal policies. Upon discovery, Light & Wonder took immediate action and implemented strengthened processes designed to prevent similar incidents. Wilson positioned the settlement as protecting the interests of customers, employees, and shareholders while allowing the company to refocus on developing market-leading content.

Moving Forward With Renewed Safeguards

The settlement provides both companies path forward. Aristocrat secured substantial financial compensation and enforcement of its IP boundaries across Light & Wonder’s product lines. Light & Wonder eliminated one significant interruption from its business, the lingering litigation that could have lasted several years, and can now focus on developing new content outside of those disputed titles.
