It’s official: Light & Wonder has just secured one of the most talked-about approvals in the gaming world. The company confirmed that it’s been granted a vendor licence from the General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority (GCGRA), making it one of the first gaming suppliers to get the green light in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
This is big.
The licence gives Light & Wonder the go-ahead to supply land-based electronic gaming machines, table games, gaming utilities, and digital iGaming content to approved operators in the UAE. That means they’re now in a prime position to support both bricks-and-mortar venues and online platforms in what’s shaping up to be a new frontier for regulated gaming.
A milestone move
Matt Wilson, President and CEO of Light & Wonder, didn’t downplay the significance of the announcement. He said:
“Securing a license from the GCGRA is an important milestone for Light & Wonder as we enter one of the most anticipated new regulated markets in the world.”
He also made it clear that this isn’t just about market access, it’s about setting a tone.
“We’re honoured to be among the first approved suppliers and are committed to bringing our trusted, responsible and player-first approach to the UAE.”
The GCGRA was only formed in 2023, but it’s already become the key regulatory body overseeing commercial gaming in the UAE. The country is taking a phased approach to regulation, but with major names like Light & Wonder already licensed, it’s clear the foundation is being laid for serious industry development.
Why it matters
Light & Wonder isn’t just stepping into a new market, it’s doing so with momentum. According to its Q1 2025 financial results, the company has posted revenue growth for the 16th straight quarter, with adjusted EBITDA up 11%.
In June, it expanded its long-standing partnership with BetMGM, launching The Wizard of Oz – Follow the Yellow Brick Road, the second title in its branded slot series. That game hit markets in New Jersey, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Ontario, strengthening its footprint across North America.
Earlier in the year, Light & Wonder also closed an $850 million acquisition of Grover Gaming’s charitable gaming assets, pushing into a new vertical while continuing to scale its cross-platform capabilities.
Global focus, local entry
The company now supplies a wide range of operators across North America, Europe, and the Middle East. And with the UAE beginning to open its doors to regulated gambling, Light & Wonder has arrived at just the right time.
This licence doesn’t just represent access—it signals trust, and it positions the company to be one of the key players as the UAE builds out its gaming framework.
With more regional developments expected and other international suppliers watching closely, this approval could be the start of a much bigger story.
