Hong Kong-listed LET Group, formerly Suncity Group, is attempting a corporate reboot. After a mass exodus of directors last year, Chairman Andrew Lo was left as the lone ranger, and the company announced the appointment of four new board members. The goal? To repopulate the board and meet the Hong Kong Exchange’s requirements for resuming trading after a tumultuous period. But can these new additions truly steer the ship back on course?
Familiar Faces Return: Deja Vu at LET Group
Two of the new appointees, Tou Kin Chuen and John Lo Wai Tung, are actually returning directors, having previously served on the board under the company’s Suncity Group guise. It’s like bringing back the old band members for one last tour – but will they be able to recapture the magic, or will it just be a nostalgic trip down memory lane?
These familiar faces bring a sense of continuity to a company that has undergone significant disruption in recent years, but you have to wonder why they left in the first place, and what has changed to bring them back. Have the underlying issues that caused the initial exodus been resolved, or are they simply filling seats to appease the Hong Kong Exchange?
Fresh Blood: Tech and Accounting Expertise
The other two new directors bring fresh perspectives to the table. Lam Hung Tuan, currently the Chief Technology Officer of LET Group’s Philippines subsidiary, Suntrust Resort Holdings, brings valuable tech expertise to the board. With Suntrust developing a massive US$1.1 billion hotel and casino complex in Manila’s Entertainment City, Lam’s insights will be crucial for navigating the increasingly tech-driven world of gaming.
Chan Suet Ngan, a seasoned accountant with over 23 years of experience, adds financial expertise to the mix. Her extensive background in accounting, finance, and company secretariat will be invaluable as LET Group seeks to regain its financial footing and comply with regulatory requirements.
Tigre de Cristal: The Elephant in the Room
The elephant in the room is, of course, LET Group’s stake in Tigre de Cristal, the Russian casino resort. The attempted sale of this asset by Chairman Andrew Lo triggered the initial board exodus and led the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) to suspend trading in LET Group’s shares.
The SFC has even launched legal action against Lo, alleging that he “deliberately disregarded the applicable Listing Rules and the requirements under the Code on Takeovers and Mergers.” While Lo has resumed efforts to sell off the Russian interests, Summit Ascent (in which LET holds a large stake) still owns a majority stake in the resort’s operator. Until this situation is resolved, LET Group will continue to operate under a cloud of uncertainty.
Can LET Group Stage a Comeback?
The appointment of these new directors is a positive step towards stability and regulatory compliance for LET Group. However, the company still faces significant challenges, including the ongoing legal battle with the SFC, the unresolved issue of Tigre de Cristal, and the need to regain investor confidence.
Whether these new board members can successfully navigate these challenges and steer LET Group toward a brighter future remains to be seen. They bring a mix of experience, expertise, and familiarity to the table, but they’ll need more than that to overcome the company’s troubled past and achieve long-term success.
Their biggest task is to prove to investors that the underlying problems that led to the trading suspension have been resolved. They also need to show that the company is operating with integrity and transparency. If they can do that, then LET Group may have a chance to stage a comeback.
