Legal NFL Betting Set to Climb, AGA Predicts $30B in 2025

The American Gaming Association (AGA) has released its predictions for NFL sports betting in the coming season, and it’s showing promising signs. According to the trade body, NFL fans are projected to place around $30 billion in bets at legal sportsbooks during the 2025 season.

Released on Thursday (Aug 28), this estimate shows an 8.5% rise from last year’s adjusted figure of $27.5 billion, underscoring the expanding reach of regulated sports betting across the country.

This projection encompasses traditional sportsbooks operating in 38 states and the District of Columbia, where sports wagering is permitted.

“With strong consumer protections and a shared commitment to responsibility, the legal, regulated sports betting industry encourages all football fans to have a game plan before placing a bet and ensure their gameday experience – regardless of the outcome of a bet or the game – remains enjoyable,” stated AGA President and CEO Bill Miller.

More Work to Be Done For Legal Market

The AGA’s estimates include future bets, like those on who will win the Super Bowl, as well as wagers placed on individual games from the pre-season through Super Bowl LX. While the growth in legal betting is notable, the AGA points out that the regulated market still captures only a small portion of the total amount wagered by Americans.

Recent research reveals that nearly $674 billion is staked each year with offshore and unregulated operators, highlighting the ongoing challenges posed by illegal gambling.

Legal sportsbooks view the NFL as a key driver of betting activity, with industry experts noting its cultural significance.

Positive Signs for Responsible Gambling

A recent survey by the National Council on Problem Gambling shows that risky gambling behaviours have stabilized after a rise between 2018 and 2021, a time when the pandemic and the rapid growth of sports betting options contributed to increased concerns. As legal sports betting expands, it might have a significant positive impact on responsible gambling.

Regulators and advocacy groups are actively watching these trends, acknowledging the advantages of regulated markets while also being aware of the potential social impacts.

Athlete Safety Still a Priority

As betting activity grows, both athletes and officials are under increased scrutiny. Professional sports leagues, including the NFL, have reported a rise in online threats aimed at players, coaches, and referees from unhappy bettors.

In response, league officials have emphasized the importance of safety, deploying security teams to monitor social media interactions, investigate any threats, and conduct background checks on those involved.

This proactive approach aims to safeguard participants and maintain the integrity of the game, all while recognizing the financial benefits that legal betting has brought to professional sports.
