The Sands Casino is shaking things up in New York’s casino landscape but faces some potholes in the process. Helmed by its chief, Rob Goldstein, the firm wants to put a massive integrated resort worth US$6 billion on the grounds of the Nassau County Coliseum. In the past, several events have raised eyebrows and discussion over whether this ambitious undertaking would see the light of day.
That was a concern, recently evident in comments that Goldstein had made during the quarterly earnings call. He emphasised the potential shift brought about by a new bill in the New York legislature in an effort to regulate online casino gaming. Clearly, this may change the dynamic for traditional, physical brick-and-mortar casinos like the one Sands is proposing. Goldstein warned that were online gaming ever to become real, it would cannibalise markets and the value of its physical casinos would be diluted. He said, “I believe in New York, that it’s a very strong market.But the igaming possibility for me in any market that has land-based gambling and has sports betting seems inevitable.”
Local Resistance
While the operator at Sands works to create a vibrant resort that includes high-star hotels, restaurants, and an entertainment venue, the local protest against the project is getting noisier. The environmentalists raise their objections against the threat to the flora and fauna surrounding the area. Activists of the Say NO to the Casino Civic Association have spoken about their concerns with crime, addiction problems, and traffic that could result from such a large development. Rich Catalano, one resident of Garden City, voiced his opposition, stating, “We think it’s an awful thing to place right in the heart of our community.”
The Project Vision
Despite these challenges, Sands remains committed to its vision. The proposed casino would occupy only 10% of the 72-acre site and aim to include outdoor community spaces and a live performance venue honouring local music traditions. The company believes this project could generate significant economic benefits for Nassau County. Sands estimates it would contribute over $1 billion in payments over ten years for local services and create thousands of jobs.
Tracey Edwards, corporate social responsibility officer for Sands, said the project will help make the local economy stronger. “This project isn’t just about building a world-class destination; it’s about building a stronger, more inclusive economy,” she said. The company will also procure a significant part of its goods and services from the local economy, boosting community involvement even more.
Competitive Landscape
But winning one of the licenses given for downstate casinos in itself is a tough task. With 11 proposals around New York City and the suburbs, the competition is very strong. It is expected that the New York Facility Location Board will release license winners by the end of 2025. This increases another layer of uncertainty for Sands to pass through local opposition and legislative hurdles.
Goldstein’s measured approach reflects what’s been seen across the board. For various operators, an online gaming proliferation in states like New Jersey and Pennsylvania has sparked a rethinking of strategy for land-based casinos. “You can’t ignore what’s happening in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Michigan.”

While Las Vegas Sands is eager to make its presence known on Long Island with its ambitious casino resort project, many legislative hurdles as well as broad community opposition certainly stand in its way.
