The Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LSLGA) has been awarded the Regulatory Innovation Award for its groundbreaking SAFEPLAY initiative at the 2025 International Regulatory Awards held in Toronto, Canada.
SAFEPLAY stands out as Nigeria’s first program that enables players to exclude themselves from multiple gaming operators simultaneously, effectively addressing problem gambling. Managed centrally by LSLGA and seamlessly integrated with the systems of licensed operators, the initiative offers a consistent framework for responsible gambling.
LSLGA CEO Bashir Abiola-Are said, according to an IAGR statement: “We are honoured to receive the IAGR Regulatory Innovation Award for our SAFEPLAY initiative. This recognition reaffirms our commitment to responsible gambling, player protection and data-driven regulation that puts the welfare of Lagos residents at the heart of our innovation.”
Nigeria leading the way for responsible gambling in Africa
The award was presented by IAGR Vice President Brian Krolicki, with the LSLGA team present at the conference to celebrate their achievement.
According to IAGR President Ben Haden, the awardees were chosen for their “measurable progress and sustainable outcomes,” as well as for clearly defining problems and implementing effective interventions.
He emphasised that the Regulatory Innovation Award recognizes significant reforms and innovative solutions that enhance consumer protection and market integrity.
SAFEPLAY exemplifies Lagos State’s strong commitment to responsible gaming and regulatory transparency. Supported by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, this initiative connects self-exclusion options across multiple operators, making enforcement more effective.
This positions Lagios as a leader in player protection within Africa, setting a standard for responsible gambling practices across the continent.
