The Kenyan gaming industry is uniting to promote responsible gaming and secure a sustainable future.
During the 20th anniversary celebrations of the Association of Gaming Operators Kenya (AGOK), industry leaders highlighted their dedication to fair regulations, combating illegal gambling, and safeguarding players’ interests.
As part of these efforts, initiatives like the Chukua Control campaign and improved self-exclusion systems were emphasized as pivotal to promoting responsible practices.
The introduction of a new tax regime, which focuses on taxing deposits and withdrawals instead of stakes and winnings, has led to a notable 21% increase in tax revenue compared to the previous year.
Furthermore, the government is acknowledging the industry’s importance, as the newly established Gaming Regulatory Authority (GRA) collaborates with operators to create a well-regulated environment that supports both growth and community investments, including projects like the Talanta Sports Stadium.
Raising awareness on responsible gambling
The recent enactment of the Gambling Control Act, 2025, along with the establishment of the Gaming Regulatory Authority (GRA), underscores a strong commitment to developing the gaming sector in an orderly manner and ensuring effective dispute resolution.
Officials, including Deputy Commissioner Weldon Ngeno and GRA Chairman Hon. Joseph Kirui Limo, highlighted the industry’s significant contributions to national revenue and its evolving role in both digital consumption and community development.
Michael Kagika from the National Treasury emphasized how the industry is crucial for mobilizing resources, supporting the government’s innovative financing strategies. In this context, AGOK is focused on strengthening its collaboration with regulators and other institutions to enhance transparency, compliance, and the promotion of responsible gaming.
A key initiative in this effort is the Chukua Control campaign, launched in partnership with the government. This campaign aims to raise awareness about responsible gambling through extensive outreach, mental health support, and the provision of accessible helplines.
