Kenya’s gaming regulator has released the names of 99 betting companies authorized to operate in Kenya for the financial year. This list features well-known brands such as 1xBet, SportPesa, Betika, Melbet, Dafabet, and Mayfair Casino, among others.
According to the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB), they have met all necessary requirements and are now licensed to continue their operations under the current regulatory framework.
A statement from the board noted, “Further to our letter REF: BCLB 15/1/VOL.1 (65) dated 30 June 2025, we inform you that the attached list of gaming companies have been approved for a license and therefore to continue operating after the expiry of the 30-day extension.”
This new wave of licensing aligns with Kenya’s goal of enhancing transparency and accountability in its gaming sector. It aims to protect consumers and promote responsible gaming practices.
In response to growing concerns about problem gambling and the rise of gambling advertisements in various media, the BCLB, alongside other agencies, has introduced significant reforms to better regulate the industry.
These reforms include a ban on celebrity endorsements, as well as restrictions on advertising in print media and outdoor spaces.
Tougher Restrictions on the Cards
A bill currently under review in the National Assembly could lead to significant changes for betting operators. If passed, it would require these companies to set aside a portion of their revenue for the rehabilitation of gambling addicts.
Additionally, the proposal aims to raise the minimum capital requirements for obtaining a gambling license and the betting age to 21.
Despite the potential challenge these stricter regulations may pose to their player base and revenue, the number of betting companies still seeking to operate in this market indicates the attractiveness of the market. Operators are likely to make the necessary adjustments to comply with these new rules, motivated by the lucrative opportunities the market presents.
