A sports betting bill was just advanced by Kentucky lawmakers. On Thursday, the Kentucky House of Representatives cast a vote to amend the state’s gaming regulations. The legal age to wager on sports should be raised to 21 by lawmakers. Additionally, they wish to outlaw a particular kind of betting known as a proposition bet for collegiate athletics. The state government’s first regulations, which were established only three years ago, are altered by this new law.
The Push for an Older Betting Age
Representative Michael Meredith wrote the new bill. He is a Republican and serves the Oakland region. In fact, Meredith drafted the first legislation that legalized sports betting in Kentucky in 2023. The legal betting age was then set at 18 by legislators. According to Meredith, people nowadays want an important change. He observes that the majority of voters want an increased betting age. He created the new regulations as a result of the intense public pressure. Despite his own belief that 18-year-olds should have full adult rights, he took this action. The new bill received large support from the House. For the specific results, 79 lawmakers voted in favor of the new guidelines, while 15 lawmakers voted against them.
Stopping College Prop Bets
The new bill focuses heavily on college sports. It specifically targets proposition bets. Players make these special wagers during a live game. As opposed to focusing on which team wins the entire game, they test their knowledge on how well each player does during the event. For example, a user may place a wager on the number of points scored by a particular basketball player. These bets for college athletes within the state are outright prohibited by the new Kentucky legislation. Lawmakers across the entire country worry about these specific bets right now. Critics argue that prop bets make gambling addictions much worse. They also point out that angry bettors often harass young college athletes when a specific bet fails.
Changes for Fantasy Sports and Horse Tracks
The legislation also tackles other parts of the gaming industry. It forces daily fantasy sports companies to get official state licenses. It also creates strict new rules for these fantasy sports operators to follow. The bill helps local horse racing tracks, too. It allows these tracks to offer fixed-odds betting to their customers. Tracks will offer this new option right next to their traditional pari-mutuel betting windows.
Blocking Prediction Markets
The bill also addresses a brand new trend in the gambling world. It stops sports betting companies, fantasy sports operators, and horse tracks from running prediction markets. Prediction markets let users trade money based on the outcome of future real-world events. Companies like Kalshi and Polymarket recently made these platforms very popular. Now, these prediction markets want to offer trades on live sports and athlete performances. Lawmakers do not know how to regulate these specific markets yet. Because of this confusion, the Kentucky bill completely blocks local gambling companies from touching them.
Waiting for the Senate Vote
