Keeping Players Loyal: Inside Winpot’s CRM-Led Retention Playbook

Retention has become one of the biggest challenges for online casino operators—especially in competitive and fast-growing markets like Mexico. With acquisition costs rising and players just a swipe away from the next welcome bonus, keeping them loyal is no easy task.

In this article, Dionysios Ananiadis, Head of CRM at Winpot, shares his personal views on what it takes to build lasting relationships with players. Drawing from his experience at one of Mexico’s most popular online casinos, he reflects on the fundamentals of retention, the role of CRM, and why bonusing, gamification, and customer service all play a vital part in keeping players coming back for more.

One of the greatest challenges for an online casino operator is keeping players coming back for more. To do this, you need to create such a strong sense of FOMO that players simply don’t want to go anywhere else for fear of missing out on what you have to offer.

As part of this, it’s important to incentivise the player to stay loyal to your brand – responsibly, of course – and to then reward them for doing so.

But this is easier said than done, especially when players have tons of choice when it comes to alternative online casinos to play at, plus they are only ever a couple of taps and swipes away from a welcome bonus designed to tempt them into trying another brand.

This is problematic for online casino brands, especially given the rising cost of acquisition in regulated markets such as Mexico, where Winpot operates.

So, what are we doing to make sure Winpot customers are never tempted to play somewhere else, even if that casino brand teases them with a juicy welcome offer? It starts with having a compelling online casino proposition and then deploying carefully created retention strategies and initiatives.

Nail the basics

The core online casino experience is crucial to customer retention – if the experience isn’t top-notch, players will have no reason to stick around.

This means nailing the basics across everything from onboarding and payments (especially withdrawal speed) to game selection, gamification and customer support. The journey through the casino needs to be smooth and seamless, too.

Any friction anywhere increases the likelihood of the player looking to switch to another online casino brand.

Unleash the player’s competitive spirit

With the basics in place, it’s then about elevating the player experience and adding value. At Winpot, we do this through tournaments and missions, which we combine with prizes and promotions.

Players love to go head-to-head with others and watch as their scores land on the leaderboard, which updates in real time. Missions also help to keep players active, and to push them to different parts of the casino and content offering.

It’s worth noting that this needs to be underpinned by personalised communications – it’s important to speak to players in an authentic way, and to offer them tailored tasks and rewards that align with their playing preferences and habits.

Understand the different phases of the player lifecycle

Effective retention requires a clear, concise strategy that covers all phases of the player journey and lifecycle. This includes new player activation, engagement and reactivation for lapsed users.

Each phase requires its own approach, communications, creatives, incentives and rewards. At Winpot, we have combined automated journeys with manual campaigns to ensure we are deploying the right tactics with the right player at the right time.

The idea behind effective retention is to prevent players from becoming lapsed customers, but for most operators, if they take a close look at their player base, they will find a significant number of lapsed players primed and ready to reengage so long as they receive the right communication.

The best tools for the job

Deploying retention strategies requires a tool set that takes in CRM campaigns (such as email, SMS, push notifications and in-app inbox) combined with a lot of bonus offers tailored to the player’s individual activity.

To do this, the online casino needs to be running on a powerful technology stack – Winpot uses the Wiztech platform – that gathers, stores and segments data in the right way, and with the marketing team being able to access it.

This access needs to be used alongside powerful CRM tools and with a team of specialist retention marketers for maximum impact.

Don’t underestimate the power of bonusing

The role of bonuses and rewards in retention can’t be understated. Players need to receive regular and relevant promotions to keep them interested and engaged with the brand. Personalisation and consistency are key here, but again, this requires cutting-edge tech, data and segmenting.

That said, it is becoming increasingly difficult for operators in regulated markets to offer big bonuses to players, with concerns around responsible gambling rightly being raised.

This is why operators need to think about adding another layer to receiving a promotion, whether that be through a prize wheel or a mini-game. How the player gets the reward is just as important – and just as fun – as the reward itself.

Customer support is your retention superpower

At Winpot, we also see customer service as an important aspect of our retention activity. Delivering a superior experience is key to keeping them coming back for more, and customer service agents are on the front line of this.

Quick, helpful and friendly support makes a big difference to player satisfaction, and if players are satisfied, they are unlikely to go elsewhere.

It’s important for operators to see retention as something dynamic. At Winpot, we are flexible and move fast to adjust campaigns if needed, while always localising and personalising communications and offers based on each player.

It’s an approach that’s worked well for us so far, and as we get even better at monitoring player behaviours and keep testing new ideas, we will only get better at it.
