Kangwon Land’s 2025 Profits Fall 31% Despite Growth in Sales

Kangwon Land Inc, the operator of the only casino in South Korea that allows local gamblers, recorded a 30.7 percent decline in its net income for 2025 despite a 3.5 percent increase in sales. The company attributed the decline in net income to a decrease in non-operating income, which was lower than the previous year, it said in a preliminary filing with the Korea Exchange on Wednesday. Full audited results are due out January 28 for the operator of the namesake resort and casino tucked in the hills outside Seoul. The early disclosure triggered under exchange rules for swings over 30 percent in key metrics, based on unaudited consolidated statements.

Numbers Behind the Dip

Kangwon Land’s net income of KRW316.52 billion or US$215.8 million represented a decrease of KRW456.89 billion from the prior year’s higher amount. The firm achieved sales of almost KRW1.48 trillion, an increase over the nearly KRW1.43 trillion of the previous year; however, operating income dropped even more significantly, declining by 17.7 percent to KRW235.18 billion. Non-operating gains, which contributed to increased profits in 2024, appear to have had an off year, as profits declined despite the increase in revenue from table games and slots. The resort’s special local access sets it apart from other foreigner-only gaming establishments.

Debt Repayment Clouds Loom

The finances of Kangwon Land could be limited soon as a result of the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy’s move to tap its earnings to settle a KRW2.46 trillion debt of its subsidiary, Korea Coal Corp. According to local media reports, the proposal involves allocating 10 percent of its sales to meet the debt. This move will lead to the reduction of its earnings and will also be a burden to the operator to meet due to its daily operations. The proposal fits the government’s push to resolve legacy coal liabilities using casino proceeds tied to abandoned mine redevelopment.

K-HIT Revamp in Motion

Kangwon Land has been actively pursuing the K-HIT 1.0 Project, a renovation initiative with an anticipated completion date by 2035, that is budgeted at KRW3.00 trillion. Kangwon Land also has a successful operational history that began upon the casino’s opening in 1994. It depends on national government approval, with the acting CEO overseeing progress amid financial shifts. The initiative seeks to modernize the upland site, blending gaming with non-gaming draws to sustain local visitation. As profits dipped, the project represents a bet on future growth through reinvestment.

Balancing Revenue and Obligations

Sales growth offered some buffer, but non-operating shortfalls exposed vulnerabilities. The Korea Exchange filing flags the 30.7 percent net drop as material, prompting early transparency. With debt talks and K-HIT underway, Kangwon navigates pressures while holding its monopoly on Korean-playable gaming. Full January 28 details will clarify audited figures and outlook, as the operator eyes steadying amid headwinds.
