Indonesia’s war on illegal online gambling is finally bearing fruit, with new government statistics showing a marked drop in the number of financial transactions and gamblers. According to data issued by the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) for the third quarter, the cumulative value of transactions in online gambling dropped to Rp155 trillion, or around US$9.27 billion. This is a drastic drop of no less than 57 percent from the same period in the previous year, thus effectively cutting off the money supply to these illegal gambling sites.
Player Numbers in Free Fall
Apart from this, the human side of this issue has also undergone a drastic change. From PPATK statistics, the number of active online gamblers in the country has shown a drastic decrease. Whereas only 9.7 million people were estimated to be online gamblers in 2024, this number has dwindled down to only 3.1 million in 2025. A decline of more than six million users clearly reveals that the government’s initiative of online obstacles, along with online screening of their financial background, is having a demotivating impact on people.
Validating the Strategy
For the Indonesian government, these numbers serve as validation for a strategy that has intensified over the past year. Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid characterized the data as credible proof that the administration’s policies are working as intended. The minister is happy with the fact that the numbers are not the result of coincidence but rather the result of collective effort through monitoring, access blocking, and strict law enforcement. The strategy has managed to make the operating viability of most of the gambling companies impossible by addressing the entire ecosystem, from what the users see on the screens to the infrastructure supporting the ecosystem.
A Coordinated National Effort
The minister reiterated that the results are indicators of the good coordination between government institutions and the citizenry. The state has positioned itself as a custodian of the citizenry against the effects of widespread gambling addiction. Hafid reiterated that the state is committed to its role in protecting the interests of the citizens. This is an affirmative move by the government. Essentially, what it aims at is protecting the citizenry from going into financial loss.
Sustaining the Pressure
Although the signs are positive, the government is not giving any indication that they will consider the matter concluded and thus not require any further action. According to Hafid, the crackdown and supervision will continue increasing. He added that the plan is to continue having a quick reaction system for any illegal activity report, and also blocking the new online betting platforms as soon as they emerge. Moreover, stricter restrictions will also be imposed on payment channels.
A Persistent Focus on Enforcement
As the fight against online gambling presses on, the attention continues to focus on addressing the loopholes that might still be used. The fact that the volume of transactions and the number of players significantly reduced shows that the present combination of online and financial policies is effective. Nevertheless, the fact that the government is committed to making these controls even tighter suggests that they realize that the fight against online gambling is not a one-time battle. With the fact that millions of players have already left the industry, the new task at hand is to make sure that they never come back.
