Indonesia’s Financial Services Authority has told banks to carry out enhanced due diligence or block more bank accounts suspected of being linked to illegal online gambling. The latest order covers 36,191 accounts, up by 2,355 from the previous update in April, as authorities continue to widen the banking crackdown.
New Accounts Added To Freeze List
Dian Ediana Rae, chief executive for banking supervision at the OJK, said the accounts were identified using information provided by the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs. Banks have also been instructed to close other accounts linked to the same national identification numbers and to keep monitoring customer profiles and transactions to ensure they comply with financial regulations.
The OJK said the measures are part of its continuing efforts to stop the banking system from being used for illegal activity. It said the goal is also to prevent actions that could threaten financial stability.
The latest action follows earlier enforcement steps against accounts suspected of being used for online gambling. With the number now at 36,191, the regulator is extending the scope of its supervision over accounts that may be tied to unlawful betting transactions.
Banks Told To Broaden Monitoring
The OJK’s instruction goes beyond simply freezing the flagged accounts. Banks are also being told to look for other accounts associated with the same identification numbers, which means the checks are being expanded across linked customer records.
That additional step is meant to make it harder for suspected users to move activity from one account to another after a freeze. The regulator wants banks to ensure that customer information and transaction patterns remain aligned with financial rules.
By tying the accounts to national identification numbers, the OJK is also pushing banks to look at wider customer relationships rather than isolated accounts. That approach is part of the regulator’s broader response to online gambling-related financial activity.
Coordination With Digital Ministry
The accounts were flagged using information supplied by the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs. That indicates the crackdown is being carried out through coordination between the financial regulator and the ministry responsible for digital affairs.
The arrangement shows how the government is linking online gambling enforcement with the banking system. Information gathered by the ministry is being used to identify accounts that may be part of illegal activity, while banks are then expected to act on that data through enhanced due diligence or account blocking.
The OJK said the measures are intended to support a cleaner financial system and reduce the risk that banks are used for unlawful transactions. The regulator framed the move as part of a wider effort to protect the stability of the financial sector.
Wider Enforcement Effort Continues
The latest order adds to Indonesia’s broader campaign against online gambling. The OJK said the action is designed to stop illegal activity from spreading through the banking network and to strengthen financial oversight.
By increasing the number of flagged accounts and directing banks to close others linked to the same identification numbers, the regulator is making the enforcement net wider. The measures also show that the authorities are continuing to rely on banking controls as a key part of the anti-gambling response.
The OJK said the current steps are ongoing and aimed at preventing the financial system from being used in ways that could threaten stability.
