House Loses; Wynn’s Q4 Miss

Wall Street punishes imperfection. Wynn Resorts found this out the hard way this morning. The casino giant released its Q4 earnings report. The numbers missed the mark. Consequently, the stock took an immediate hit. The culprit wasn’t a lack of customers. It was simply a run of bad luck at the tables.

The Earnings Miss

The headline numbers tell a story of high volume but low retention. Wynn reported earnings per share of $1.17. Analysts expected $1.47. That thirty-cent miss triggered a sell-off. Investors hate volatility. They hate uncertainty even more. However, the operational engine remains intact. The company generated adjusted property earnings of $569 million for the quarter. For the full year, that figure climbed to $2.224 billion. The business is making money. It just didn’t make as much as the spreadsheets predicted.

Las Vegas Bleeds Chips

The flagship property on the Strip faced specific headwinds. Wynn Las Vegas generated $241 million in earnings. Yet, the tables turned against the house. The table games’ win percentage dropped to 26.0 percent. This represents a decline of 490 basis points year-on-year. Simply put, the players got lucky. High rollers walked away with more cash than usual. Despite the bad beat at the baccarat tables, the hotel side held strong. The average daily rate increased by 2.2 percent to $611. Luxury travel demand persists; however, revenue per available room dipped slightly. It edged down 1.3 percent to $520.

The Macau Paradox

Across the Pacific, the story repeated itself. Macau operations delivered $271 million in earnings. The volume is undeniably back. VIP turnover surged nearly 48 percent to $6.14 billion. The whales have returned to the enclave. Furthermore, the mass market drop increased by nearly 18 percent. But again, the house edge faltered. The VIP win percentage fell to 2.94 percent. This sits below the company’s normalized range. High-stakes gambling carries high variance. In Q4, that variance swung in favor of the player.

The Arabian Bet

With the current luck running dry, management pointed to the future. The spotlight shifts to the Middle East. The Wynn Al Marjan Island project in the UAE remains the company’s ace in the hole. Construction is on track for a first-quarter 2027 opening. The project changes the geometry of the company. Management estimates the property could generate $345 million in base-case earnings. The potential upside reaches as high as $460 million. This significantly diversifies the group’s earnings base. It reduces reliance on the volatile VIP segments in Macau and Vegas.

The Cost of Ambition

Growth requires capital. Wynn outlined a heavy spending plan for 2026. The company expects to pour between $375 million and $450 million into the UAE project this year alone. Simultaneously, Las Vegas will see up to $400 million in upgrades. Macau also demands fresh investment. Capital expenditure there will hit up to $450 million in 2026. The company is modernizing its fleet. It is preparing for the next decade of luxury gaming.

The Fortress Balance Sheet

Despite the earnings miss, the financial foundation remains solid. As of December 31, Wynn reported $1.8 billion in domestic liquidity. The Macau division holds another $2.9 billion. This war chest allows them to weather bad quarters. It also funds shareholder returns. Since 2022, Wynn has returned approximately $1.4 billion to investors through buybacks and dividends.

The Bottom Line

The Q4 proved that the house doesn’t always win every hand. Short-term variance hurts the bottom line. However, the long-term strategy remains aggressive, as Wynn is building a bridge to 2027. They bet that the UAE will smooth out the ride, and until then, investors must stomach the swings.
