Newly appointed Gogrial East County Commissioner William Dechak has moved quickly to impose a ban on gambling and dominoes, warning that anyone caught idling during working hours will face punishment.
He described the directive as part of a wider plan to push young people toward productive activities and away from habits he believes fuel conflict and slow development. “Nobody should be seen playing dominoes when he is supposed to be doing something productive for himself or his family,” Dechak said.
The commissioner explained that offenders will be redirected to brick-making teams along the riverbanks, where their labor will support public infrastructure projects.
The order, reported by Sudans Post, has drawn mixed reactions. Some residents welcomed the move, saying it could reduce fights linked to gambling losses and encourage responsibility. Deng Gabriel, a local resident, said the directive would help youths “focus on supporting our families” instead of spending nights on idle games.
Elders also voiced support, noting that gambling has distracted young men from duties such as herding cattle. Others, however, expressed unease. Several young people, speaking anonymously, warned that cutting off small gambling earnings could push some into crime.
