The National Lottery Authority (NLA) has launched a new sticker system aimed at identifying legitimate lottery agents and cracking down on unlicensed operators. During a press conference in Accra, Director-General Mohammed Abdul-Salam explained that this move is part of the Mahama administration’s broader reform agenda for the lottery sector.
The NLA plans to implement this system starting September 1. The stickers will clearly mark registered operators and writers, enabling enforcement teams to easily differentiate between lawful businesses and those acting outside the regulations.
“As part of government reforms led by President John Dramani Mahama, the overall objective is to reform, redirect and improve operations. The NLA must generate substantial revenue for the State, which will be channelled towards national development,” Abdul-Salam stated.
Lotto Agents Praise Move
Executive Secretary of the Concerned Lotto Agents Association of Ghana (CLAAG), Kwaku Duah Tawiah, expressed strong support for the new sticker initiative, stating, , “The purpose of the stickers is to weed out illegal operators, agents and writers. Any writer who continues to work with an unregistered operator does so at their own risk.”
He urged legitimate businesses to rally behind the system, emphasizing that any attempts to undermine it would not receive backing from the association.
Tawiah further highlighted the importance of the initiative for the nation, saying, “Any money that goes to the wrong pocket does not help us as a nation. I am appealing to all lottery operators to support this process.”
Andrew Tuah, Head of Operations at the NLA, added that the registration of private lotto agents and writers had initially started in September 2024 but faced delays due to technical challenges. He mentioned, “This year, with renewed commitment from the Director-General, we are going ahead to ensure all writers and agents are duly registered so that sanity is restored to the industry.”
According to the NLA, the sticker scheme marks a significant step forward in regulating Ghana’s lottery sector, laying the groundwork for a more transparent and accountable system that aligns with the country’s development goals.
