Gentoo Media’s Q2 2025: Restructuring, Resilience, and a Bet on the Second Half

Gentoo Media has published its Q2 2025 results, reporting weaker revenues but strong operational signals. The quarter was defined by restructuring, tighter cost controls, and heavy investment in growth markets. Management frames the period as transitional, with expectations of improved profitability in the second half of the year.

Revenues Decline, Margins Under Pressure

The affiliate group reported €24.4 million in revenues for Q2, a 19% year-on-year decline. EBITDA before special items fell to €7.5m with a 31% margin, compared to 49% last year. Restructuring costs of €1.8m brought the net result to -€1.0m.

Despite these pressures, operating cash flow was positive at €7.7m, reflecting improvements in working capital. Management also highlighted progress on its cost-reduction program, which is expected to deliver €8–10m in annualized savings through workforce resizing, marketing optimization, and vendor efficiency.

Player Intake at Near-Record Levels

While top-line performance lagged, operational indicators were robust. Gentoo attracted 136,000 new depositing customers (FTDs) in Q2, close to an all-time high, and total deposits rose to €195m. Paid media was a standout driver, doubling intake from 42k in Q1 to 84k in Q2, supported by improved targeting and lower cost per acquisition.

Brazil remained the strategic focus. The company invested an extra €1.5m in marketing to capture post-regulation opportunities. While revenue underperformed expectations in the quarter, management noted that deposits and margins in Brazil reached record highs after Q2, pointing to long-term potential.

Streamlined Portfolio and SEO Shifts

Gentoo has slimmed its publishing portfolio to 70 active sites, concentrating on high-value assets including AskGamblers.com, WSN.com, Casinotopsonline.com, and Time2play.com. The strategy is designed to improve scalability and focus resources on markets and brands with the strongest growth potential.

The late-June Google Core update delivered mixed but overall positive results. WSN.com achieved record revenues, while Casinotopsonline.com and Time2play.com gained search visibility. AskGamblers, however, lost ground and is undergoing corrective actions.

The company also benefits from a wide base of localized websites, a legacy of its Scandinavian roots. Though not individually detailed, six of Gentoo’s top ten sites improved rankings after the update, with the rest holding stable, underscoring portfolio resilience.

Revised Guidance for 2025

Gentoo has adjusted its full-year outlook to reflect slower-than-expected revenue recovery in the first half:

  • Revenue: €100–105m

  • EBITDA before special items: €40–43m

  • EBITDA margin: 40–41%

  • Free cash flow: €27–30m

CEO Jonas Warrer described Q2 as a necessary reset:

“We have taken a step back in order to take two steps forward. Our cost base is healthier, our portfolio sharper, and our teams more focused. These measures position us for sustainable profitability in the years ahead.”

Editorial Comment

Gentoo Media’s Q2 results underline some of the structural shifts shaping the affiliate sector. The company reported one of its strongest quarters ever for FTD growth, yet profitability declined. This makes sense in light of its push into Brazil, a market that delivers high volumes but lower average player values.

The quarter also illustrates the influence of Google’s algorithm updates on affiliate performance. Diversification proved its worth — WSN.com gained, Casinotopsonline.com and Time2play.com improved, while AskGamblers lost ground. Still, the broader reality is that Google has become a more unpredictable gatekeeper, and recent updates have made life harder for affiliates across the industry.

The open question is whether this marks the beginning of a longer-term trend that will continue in future Google updates, or if the volatility will stabilize. Either way, Gentoo’s reliance on a mix of flagship and localized sites may be the best hedge against these structural risks. The answer will likely become clearer in the next set of quarterly results.
