Following its recent partnership with Botswana, the Lesotho Casino Board has now joined forces with the Gauteng Gambling Board (GGB) to enhance regulatory standards in the gaming industry across both regions.
In late April, reps from both regulators met at the 2nd Binational Commission held in Maseru to share knowledge about best practices and also strengthen oversight mechanisms, ensuring a more responsible and transparent gambling environment.
The discourse was led by Karabo Mbele, CEO of the GGB, who provided an overview of the South African regulatory framework and shared insights into the workings of one of the continent’s biggest gambling markets. Mbele also emphasized the importance of effectively implementing regulations and maintaining compliance.
Both regulators pledged to join forces in overcoming regulatory obstacles, and while no official agreements were signed, it was made clear that the two authorities need to combine on issues like licensing, supervision, enforcement, and policy coordination.
LCB Scores Second African Partnership in Weeks
The Gauteng announcement comes barely weeks after the Lesotho Casino Board secured a partnership with the Gambling Authority of Botswana. The two regulators formalized their collaboration by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), a significant move aimed at advancing gaming cooperation in the region.
The MoU was signed by Chairman Marvin T. Torto from the Gambling Authority and Chairman Pokello Mahlomola representing the LCB. This agreement proves that Southern African regulators are committed to fostering integrity, accountability, and responsible gambling practices throughout the region.
“This partnership is a reflection of our shared values: good governance, fairness and innovation. We are excited to walk this journey with our Lesotho counterparts and build a stronger, more resilient regulatory environment,” Torto stated.
The partnership will see both authorities collaborate more closely on licensing and share best practices, and also focus on anti-money laundering initiatives and staff training. Before signing the MoU, the teams toured Sunbet Botswana, Betway Botswana, and Moonlite Casino, where they exchanged valuable insights and compared regulatory frameworks.
