Gamban promotes a new method known as ‘layered exclusion‘, which is considered more efficient for solving the problem of gambling addictions, especially in countries with fast-developing gambling markets, including Brazil.
As company representatives claim, in Brazil, there are a huge number of illegal platforms in use, accounting for nearly 50% of all gambling in the country.
How Does Gamban Work?
The main idea behind Gamban lies in the implementation of the blocking app installed on one’s device, preventing access to gambling-related resources. It is commonly used by gamblers who have already recognized their problem and want to control themselves.
“The differentiating factor of Gamban is that, by blocking at the device level, the reach is much broader“, noted Daniel Marangoni.
Firstly, unlike in national systems, which block only licensed operators, Gamban is capable of blocking any gambling site regardless of being legally operated or not. One subscription allows blocking on up to 15 devices, decreasing the possibility of the gambler bypassing the ban.
Moreover, the subscription to the Gamban service prevents from uninstalling it while the account is active. Such measure is aimed at making it harder for those who are willing to get back to gambling and try again despite recognizing their problem.
Not Competition, but Cooperation with State Regulators
Daiana Sol D’Urso considers that there should be no competition when talking about private and state anti-gambling efforts. “We should not talk about the difference between these platforms and our services, but rather how they complement each other, because we can work together“, she mentioned.
Gamban is viewed by the company as an additional barrier protecting those users, who will still be able to gamble using illegal sites after signing up for the national system.
The Scale of the Problem
According to Marangoni, daily blocking operations of the company average at 700 websites/apps per day, and over 450,000 gambling resources have been identified in total. The process includes automated software and human resources for verifying newly emerged platforms.
“Also, our system does not block anything blindly, there is the verification part of the process“, he noted. The difficulty of detecting new resources becomes higher in time with the illegal market players becoming more creative. “Basically, it’s a cat-and-mouse game“, he stated.
Subscriptions, Pricing, and Other Features
At the moment, the Gamban subscription in Brazil costs about R$15 a month, along with a seven-day free trial. The pricing policy was created intentionally lower than usual deposits to gambling platforms.
“As I have already mentioned, it is indiscriminately blocking and the cost of the subscription is very low compared to the deposit made on betting sites. And that money is generally wagered and lost“, said Marangoni.
Moreover, along with personal subscriptions, Gamban collaborates with various organizations that provide licenses completely free for those who wish to receive one.
A Multi-layered Strategy
Although Gamban provides blocking tools for gambling, the company claims that they do not solve the entire problem by themselves.
“We advocate for layered self-exclusion, because if somebody recognizes their gambling problem, we tell him/her to also sign up for the national system, and maybe visit some psychologist and limit oneself financially“, claimed Marangoni. “It’s just as easy as getting rid of any other kind of addiction, the sooner the better”, he added.
Brazil’s Special Characteristics
Gamban representatives claim that Brazil is one of the largest and fastest-developing gambling markets. Therefore, there might be some difficulties concerning the monitoring and implementation of regulations.
On the other hand, according to the company’s representatives, Brazil is going to serve as an example for other countries in Latin America.
The Gamban’s multi-layered system appears to be another step towards creating a complex strategy for gambling addiction.
