Gabon is preparing to launch a national gambling platform designed to modernize the industry, create jobs, and tap into its economic potential. The platform, managed by Gabonese tech company e-Tech SAS in collaboration with a Canadian partner, has received government approval and aims to enhance oversight and accountability within the sector.
The Ministerial Council adopted the initiative on September 7, formalizing it through a decree that establishes the platform as a central hub for all gambling operations in the country.
“The government has approved the creation of a national integrator-aggregator entrusted to the Gabonese company e-Tech SAS, as part of a public-private partnership with a Canadian partner. This platform will provide comprehensive regulation of the sector, ensure the traceability of financial flows, guarantee the payment of winnings to bettors and optimise taxation,” a L’Union Gabon report stated.
Single regulatory framework planned
Once the platform is up and running, it will unify all gambling operators under a single regulatory framework. This approach aims to monitor financial transactions closely, helping to prevent fraud and ensuring that payouts are reliable.
Additionally, the framework will introduce modern tools for responsible gambling, including age verification and addiction monitoring systems.
Officials have made it clear that this reform is intended to support existing operators rather than push them out of the market. They plan to give businesses enough time to adjust their practices to comply with the new standards.
“It should also create local jobs, enable better monitoring of addiction risks and protect all stakeholders,” the report added.
Broader digital reforms for Gabon
Gabon’s push for a national gambling platform is part of a wider effort to embrace digital reforms across various sectors. In September, the government unveiled a new legal framework aimed at modernizing public administration, boosting transparency, and enhancing data security.
This initiative also seeks to encourage local private-sector firms to compete for public contracts. By integrating the gambling platform into these broader reforms, Gabon aims to establish itself as a leader in the region for tech-driven and well-regulated gaming.
Despite these promising changes, the online gambling landscape still faces challenges, as much of it remains unregulated. Many residents continue to access foreign gambling platforms, highlighting the need for improved oversight. The Ministry of Finance and the National Lottery Authority are actively involved in licensing and ensuring compliance among current operators, which helps maintain accountability within the sector.
