FIFA Explores the Launch of a “FIFA Coin” and “FIFA Token”

Gianni Infantino has again hinted at the possibility of the launch of a digital asset that is pegged to the governing body of world football. During his address at the World Freedom Forum last month, FIFA’s president announced that the governing body is looking into the possibility of creating a “FIFA Token” and a “FIFA Coin.”

As reported by various media outlets, the FIFA president introduced the idea as a “global currency with real potential for the 6 billion football fans around the world.” The move is significant in that it not only places the potential digital currency of FIFA as a simple crypto project but also as a massive undertaking that aims to capture the attention of the massive global following.

This is not the first time that Infantino has introduced the idea of digital currency. He first brought it up during the White House Crypto Summit in March 2025, where he stated that the project could be developed in the United States. During the event, he also stated that the project would be pegged to five billion football fans. However, in his latest statement, it appears that the project is aiming for an even bigger market, as the number of potential fans has increased by one billion.

If there is anyone here interested in collaborating with FIFA, we are here, together with the United States, and we will conquer the world of football with FIFA Coin”, he said during the previous event.

Timing and Political Context

Although Infantino has revived the idea about 12 months after first presenting it, there is still a lack of concrete information. There is still no official information about the particular use of the coin or token, who would develop the infrastructure, or when a possible launch could take place.

However, it is believed that the overall situation may have changed. The FIFA relationship with Donald Trump has become more and more transparent over the past few months. In a symbolic act during the first meeting of the Peace Board, Infantino jokingly wore a “Make America Great Again” cap on stage, showing the ever-growing closeness between the two men.

This new closeness comes before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The event is expected to have a massive economic effect, with forecasts suggesting a $50 billion economic impact on the U.S. economy.

In July 2025, FIFA further entrenched its presence in the United States by opening an office in Trump Tower and awarding Trump the FIFA Peace Award.

Strategic Implications

Although the roadmap for the FIFA Coin has yet to be defined, the fact that it has been brought up again shows that FIFA is serious about furthering its presence in the digital asset market. If implemented, this project would likely have a massive impact on how fans interact with the sport.

At this point, the project is still in its exploratory phase, but its size, ambition, and geopolitical implications make it one of the most fascinating possibilities at the crossroads of sports and blockchain technology.
