At the start of the week, Epic Games was thrust into controversy when it included a new monetization scheme for its most popular user-made map, titled “Steal the Brainrot“, which had been included with a major update to the popular online video game. In the updated version, a reward wheel had been included that allowed users to spin for random rewards using virtual currency, known as V-Bucks, that could be obtained with real money.
The mechanic was quickly noticeable due to how much it resembled those found in casino games, specifically Slot Machines found at various casinos. Players could obtain one spin for every four hours played for free, but beyond that, they had to pay to obtain additional spins, with 100 V-Bucks (equivalent to 0.99USD) getting players one additional spin, whereas 200 V-Bucks (equivalent to 1.99USD) earned players three additional spins.
Content Creators and Paid Random Rewards
The update allowed content creators to sell in-game content for V-Bucks for the first time. This essentially added a shop and a form of roulette to “Steal the Brainrot”, a game mode made by content creators.
“Steal the Brainrot” is similar to other games that can be found on game platforms like Roblox, as players collect items named “brainrots”, which are also memes that players steal to earn money and experience points. Even though this game mode has been a favorite for its originality and funny theme, the idea involving the purchase of these rewards became a big change for Fortnite user-generated content.
Community Backlash and Comparisons to Gambling
Needless to say, the reaction within the community was very swift. There was an outcry that the new system is nothing but an adaptation of the mechanisms used in gambling. It was additionally mentioned that, when combining spending, winning, and the pressure of limited-time offers, anyone would realize that the roulette was indistinguishable from a slot machine in a casino.
However, with increasing discussion, Epic Games faced mounting pressure to comment on this matter, with concerns raised not only about ethics but also about overall implications, as this now involved exposing younger audiences, constituting a substantial percentage of Fortnite players, to gambling-like experiences.
Epic Games Responds and Updates Its Guidelines
Epic Games’ response to the backlash was swift. Reports say the company chose to regulate the policies regarding the gaming markets, but specifically for users’ creations like “Steal the Brainrot.” In the revised Monetization Guidelines, users are no longer allowed to create games wherein a certain prize wheel can be spun using their payments.
Furthermore, the sale associated with upgrades that help improve the odds of winning better prizes with the help of randomized drawings has also been prohibited. Epic Games has been quite straightforward about the point that all developers and creators have to remove such elements completely.
The revised rules were enforced starting January 20. Such regulations have to be followed mandatorily by creators across Fortnite’s system.
A Broader Signal to the Industry
The removal of randomized reward systems linked to the use of any form of paid currency by Epic Games implies that the company has established a boundary with respect to the kind of monetization strategy that should or should not be implemented. There is a growing sense of gaming industry concern with respect to the mechanics of betting.
Although “Steal the Brainrot” remains a popular and creative way to play, this controversy demonstrates what game platforms face in terms of balancing creator monetization, consumer appeal, and ethical implications for a video game.
