Côte d’Ivoire’s Gambling Regulatory Authority Seizes and Destroys Over 100 Illegal Slot Machines

In one of its biggest ever operations against illegal online gambling, Côte d’Ivoire’s Gambling Regulatory Authority has burned down over 110 unauthorised slot machines and their components in Abidjan.

The Autorité de Régulation des Jeux de Hasard (ARJH) is tasked with overseeing and licensing gambling operations throughout Côte d’Ivoire. In this recent crackdown, the ARJH collaborated with the Economic and Financial Criminal Unit and the Criminal Asset Recovery Agency.

The destruction included not only the 110 illegal slot machines but also 84 boxes and 13 bags filled with electrical and electronic components, all carried out in the presence of various administrative, judicial, and traditional authorities.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to eradicate unauthorised gambling activities across the nation, following similar operations in regions like Bouaflé.

The ARJH said in a press release:

“The action was welcomed by the Sub-Prefect of Bingerville, Kapié Koné, representing the Prefect of Abidjan. The Chairman of the Regulatory Council, Jules Dally, recalled the harmful effects of illegal gambling. He praised the foresight of President Alassane Ouattara for establishing the ARJH and reaffirmed the determination of the gaming sector watchdog to wage war on all lawbreakers.”

Awareness campaigns to continue

The ARJH is committed to protecting the legal gambling industry while ensuring compliance with Article 10 of Law No. 2020-480, which mandates prior authorisation for operating slot machines in Côte d’Ivoire. To support this mission, Director General Kouakou Okou announced plans to continue awareness campaigns aimed at educating the public and industry stakeholders about the importance of legal compliance.

Additionally, the authority will organize an annual conference that brings together operators and judicial authorities. This event aims to foster collaboration and develop sustainable regulatory solutions that benefit the entire gambling sector.
