Colombia’s internet betting sector has reached a landmark by generating 47% of the country’s total gambling revenue. According to figures published by La República, the expansion reflects the pioneering role played by internet-based sites in Colombia’s evolving gambling sector. Online gaming alone registered over COP 10,000 million (approximately USD 2.5 million) in sales in the second quarter of 2024.
Widespread Acceptance Among Colombian Bettors
Playtech, the world’s foremost gambling technology solutions supplier, recently conducted a survey in which it was discovered that 87% of Colombians engage in a betting activity at least once a month. Of these, 67% bet weekly. Interestingly, the survey found that Colombians aged 45 to 54 years (75%) were the most active participants, surpassing the 52% participation rate of the 18 to 24 age bracket.
Playtech’s Regional Director, Pedro Extremera, discussed the broader implications of this growth: “We know that this industry’s exponential growth will be a business opportunity for many operators and suppliers. With this survey, we wanted to analyze user habits and preferences in various markets, and Colombia stands out for its maturity“.
Colombia: A High-Spending and Mature Market
Playtech’s research further discovered that Colombia alone has over 8 million active betting accounts, making it one of the most advanced gambling markets in the Latin American region. Colombian users spend more on average per month compared to users in the area.
Spending habits vary significantly by age and gender. Around 21% of the respondents reported spending less than COP 10,000 a month on gambling. On the other hand, 32% reported spending over COP 50,000 a month. For the 55 and above group, 44% reported spending over COP 50,000, while only 14% of the younger gamers (18–24 years) did.
How Colombians Spend Their Winnings
The Playtech study also looked at what players do with gambling winnings. The majority of players said they use the money to cover day-to-day expenses. But age is also a deciding factor here: 48% of players in the 18 to 24 age group said they save winnings, but only 36% of those aged 55 and above do.
Budgeting and Responsible Gambling Practices
Responsible gambling behavior is yet another focus area of the study. Nearly 49% of Colombian gamblers say they set a budget before engaging in gambling activity, and 73% of them adhere to it. Again, older gamblers are more restrained—42% of gamblers above the age of 55 adhere to their budget strictly, whereas only 25% of young adults in the 18-24 age group say they do so.
Colombia’s online gambling sector continues to be a cornerstone of the nation’s gaming economy. As the number of users increases, spending grows, and the market displays clear maturity, Colombia offers a glimpse into the future of Latin America’s regulated online betting. As regulators and operators attempt to balance growth with responsible practices, Colombia’s model may offer a blueprint for the region’s jurisdictions.
