Coinbase is moving forward with plans to grow its prediction markets by acquiring The Clearing Company, a startup built around event-based trading.
The exchange recently introduced prediction markets to its platform, giving users the ability to place wagers on outcomes ranging from elections and economic reports to sports and cultural events.
By bringing The Clearing Company on board, Coinbase aims to strengthen the rollout and integrate prediction markets into its broader crypto, stocks, and derivatives offering. The company described the deal as part of its vision for an “Everything Exchange,” where traditional financial products sit alongside contracts tied to real-world events.
In its announcement, Coinbase highlighted the demand it sees for regulated on-chain prediction markets and said the acquisition would help elevate the category. The Clearing Company’s experience in building and running these markets is expected to support Coinbase’s push to expand user engagement and grow event-based trading within a regulated framework.
January completion eyed
Coinbase expects its purchase of The Clearing Company to wrap in January, with the deal still subject to standard closing steps. Until then, the startup will continue running on its own, but once the transaction is complete, its team is set to move under Coinbase and help drive the company’s push into prediction markets.
The Clearing Company marks Coinbase’s tenth acquisition this year, showing how aggressively the exchange is widening its scope beyond crypto trading. Earlier in 2025, Coinbase struck a $2.9 billion agreement for derivatives platform Deribit and later added investment app Echo in a deal worth about $375 million.
The latest move signals that prediction markets are becoming a central part of its long-term strategy, as Coinbase works to build out what it calls an “Everything Exchange.”
