At a public forum in Puerto Montt, the Executive President of the Chilean Association of Gaming Casinos (ACCJ), Cecilia Valdés, and ex-prosecutor Carlos Gajardo Pinto made passionate appeals for the regulation of Chile’s online gaming and sports betting industry.
Valdés highlighted the threat of the growing number of unregulated online forums, warning that the absence of legal oversight is providing fertile ground for corruption, particularly in the realm of professional sport. According to her opinion, betting houses sponsor sporting events and teams unrestrained, and this jeopardizes the integrity of such events.
Criticism of Arturo Vidal and Conflict of Interest
Among the objects of Valdés’s criticism was Chilean soccer legend Arturo Vidal, who plays for Colo Colo and endorses the iGaming portal “Juega con el King.” Valdés condemned Vidal for being linked to a sports book shop in which individuals can wager on his own matches, remarking, “We can see that sport is completely corrupted by this. An athlete has a platform that sponsors games and makes possible betting on himself.”
She noted that this creates a grave conflict of interest, which could lead players to influence the outcome or play below their capability to influence bookmakers’ odds, behaviors that may harm the integrity of sports in Chile.
Carlos Gajardo Contributes Legal Insight
Carlos Gajardo, a retired public prosecutor, testified on behalf of Valdés’s charges and offered a juridical perspective to the issue. He was worried about the inactivity on the legislative bill to regulate internet betting, which has been pending in the Chilean Congress for much too long.
“It’s surprising the online gambling regulatory bill has lingered tSurprisingly,gress,” said Gajardo. “This is clearly a great deal for the online gambling operators—no criminalization, they don’t pay taxes, and they can advertise without restriction.”
His comment serves to underscore the clear economic and legal void in which many online operators now exist, making money out of the lack of enforcement but contributing nothing back to the national economy.
No Action by Authorities
To fuel the fire, Gajardo referred to the Chilean Public Ministry’s inaction, in defiance of official positions by the Supreme Ministry and the Superintendency of Casinos. Gajardo condemned the Ministry’s lack of willingness to investigate or prosecute illicit online casinos, which have been growing in numbers and visibility across the nation.
This passive stance, he argues, not only promotes illicit operators but also disadvantages real-world brick-and-mortar casino businesses. While the latter are tightly taxed and controlled, their web-based counterparts are nigh without obligations.
A Call for Immediate Reform
Valdés and Gajardo’s warning comes at a time when there is increasing public concern towards internet betting in Chile. The two men clearly expressed that the legislative and regulatory process does not address this matter urgently, the country will face more extensive consequences, not only regarding sport integrity but also in losing public trust and tax revenue.
As the gambling industry evolves with the integration of digital platforms, Chile’s outdated or absent regulatory mechanisms are becoming increasingly evident. With no clear rules in place, the line between legal and illegal activity remains dangerously blurred.
The words of Valdés and Gajardo are a call to action to lawmakers, regulators, and civil society to take action on these loopholes as a matter of urgency. In the absence of regulation, Chilean internet gambling could continue in the shadow economy, mandating a future of grey responsibility and diluted public interest.
