Officially closing their inquiry on the legality of online betting sites running in Chile, the Chilean Public Prosecutor’s Office has Originally launched in 2021 following lawsuits filed by land-based casinos, the Polla Chilena de Beneficencia, and the Club Hípico, the case aimed to categorize online operators under Chilean law as illegal actors.
Significant legal milestone for the online gambling industry in Chile; however, on April 11, 2025, the prosecutor’s office confirmed it would not pursue the case further. The Eighth Court of Guarantee of Santiago will officially announce the decision not to continue the proceedings on July 11, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., local media reports.
Case Dismissed After Deadline Extension Rejected
Deputy Prosecutor Rossana Folli, responsible for the Ñuñoa district case, said in a formal legal report:
Under Article 248 (c) of the Criminal Procedure Code, having the request to extend the inquiry turned down in the hearing on April 4, I hereby notify that this Prosecutor’s Office closed the present investigation on April 11, 2025, and resolved not to persevere in this process.
This ruling results from the court’s denial of more inquiry time, which finally compelled the Public Prosecutor’s Office to close the matter. This closure reflects a similar action taken in October 2023 when the Polla Chilena and land-based casinos’ complaints were also dismissed owing and insufficient evidence to support criminal accusations.
A Victory for Online Platforms
The Group of Online Betting Platforms in Chile hailed the change as a reaffirmation of their long-standing opinion and celebrated it.
In an official statement, the group said, “This statement confirms what we have defended from the beginning: that online betting platforms operate within the current legal framework, even though there is still no specific regulation in place.”
The organization highlighted once more its willingness to work with Chilean officials in creating complete laws specific to the online betting industry.
The group said, “We reiterate our full willingness to actively participate in the legislative debate, both in the National Congress and in technical forums, to advance a strong regulatory framework for Chile.”
Regulatory Gaps Highlight Need for Legal Clarity
At present, Chile has no particular laws controlling online gaming platforms’ activities. Though land-based casinos are highly controlled, digital companies operate in a legal vacuum. Legal complications arise from this ambiguity, but as recent events depict, charges of illegality have not yet been shown to be valid in court.
The latest case dismissal not only paves the road for online betting companies to keep running but also increases the legislative definition need for of the legal boundaries for the industry. Rising consumer engagement and demand for digital betting services ,together with increasing seek a strong regulatory environment is now viewed as a national priority.
Legislative Reform on the Horizon
With legal cases creeping toward resolution, focus shifts now to Chile’s parliament. Industry stakeholders, advocates groups, and government representatives all are demanding a legislative structure striking a balance among innovation, consumer protection, and financial responsibility.
The investigation’s closure signals a turning point in Chile’s changing gambling scene for the time being. Although not a conclusive endorsement, it shows a de-escalation in the legal dispute and a chance for state and industry participants to converse.
With the Chilean gambling sector entering a new phase, Congress is under pressure to provide the much-demanded openness and direction for the market.
