The Argentine club San Lorenzo de Almagro appears to be on the brink of agreeing a deal with Casino Buenos Aires Online to become the club’s new main sponsor. In the last few weeks, the club’s management has been in talks with different companies, many of them related to the betting and gaming business, as part of the process to find a replacement for fintech firm IEB+, which recently left the club as the team’s main sponsor.
This deal, if confirmed, will mark the first foray for Casino Buenos Aires Online into sponsoring a sports team. This potential deal, therefore, marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Buenos Aires-based club, which is keen to introduce some level of predictability to what has been one of the most important sources of income for the team.
The club’s management hopes that the proposed deal will see the new sponsor’s logo appear at the same time as the unveiling of the team’s new jersey, perhaps at the upcoming home game against Defensa y Justicia. However, the financial terms of the proposed deal remain a mystery at the moment.
Timing Coincides With National Debate on Gambling Advertising
This process comes at a time when the Argentine government is debating legislation that will see strict limits imposed on the advertising of online casinos and sports betting operators. A proposed law that has been pending in the Senate for more than a year, despite having received partial approval from the lower house chamber in late 2024, was introduced to the Senate last October 2025. However, no significant progress has been made on the proposed law, which was approved with 134 votes to 32 in the Chamber of Deputies. The proposed law outlines broad restrictions on the advertising, promotion, and sponsoring of such activities.
Article 8 of the bill proposes that gambling ads should not be displayed on digital media, social media, print media, radio, television, outdoor ads, sports apparel, or public space signage. The ads should, however, be displayed within the casino, bingo halls, race tracks, and lottery agencies that have been authorized to carry out gambling operations. The proposed legislation further provides that individuals who organize gambling systems should face a jail sentence of between three and eight years.
Political and Social Pressure Mounts
Despite the fact that informational meetings were organized in mid-October by the Senate Health Committee, headed by Senator Lucía Corpacci, no steps have been taken to move the bill forward. The situation has been worsened by the fact that nearly two dozen alternative bills have been proposed by senators, which has essentially slowed down the bill’s progress.
On the other hand, pressure to move the bill through Congress continues to mount, with the Catholic Church actively advocating for the regulation of online gambling through public statements. The Vice President, Victoria Villarruel, has also shown support through social media.
Social pressure is also affecting the bill’s progress, with reports emerging that eight out of ten teens and young adults in Argentina have either used online gambling websites or know of someone who has used online gambling websites in the past year. Of that number, 37 percent reportedly frequently or daily use the websites. The main purpose of the bill is to prevent minors from gaining access to online gambling websites and applications.
A Strategic Move in an Uncertain Landscape
While for San Lorenzo, signing a new main sponsor is a financial need, this new potential partnership with the online casino is also a part of a larger national debate about online gambling and how to protect the country’s youth.
While the Senate deliberations are still pending, the outcome of this sponsorship deal and the legislative process might have implications for the future of football in Argentina and online gaming.
