Buenos Aires Mandates Electronic Payments in Land-Based Gaming to Boost Transparency

The regulatory body that oversees gambling activities in the province of Buenos Aires has recently announced mandatory electronic betting payments. Specifically, it has been decided that interoperable QR Codes should be used when placing bets at agencies, racetracks, and gaming halls.

Clearly, this initiative will have far-reaching implications since it means abandoning cash in favor of digital transactions linked to bank accounts and debit cards.

Making Money Transfers More Traceable

Such an action is aimed at increasing traceability in gambling transactions. By requiring players to make their bets via the Internet, regulators will have better insight into how much money goes through licensed venues and who pays what.

Furthermore, since this document was already published in the gazette, it is clear that all gambling venues will have to adjust their operational policies accordingly.

Also, it should be noted that by imposing such regulations, regulators want to encourage wider financial inclusion through bancarization of the sector.

Gambling Payments and Responsibility

Another advantage of the transition from cash to electronic transactions is that it makes it possible to monitor player behavior patterns.

Indeed, when using the Internet as a payment tool, a lot of information becomes available, including data about the frequency and size of deposits. Therefore, regulators will be able to detect problematic gambling patterns early and take actions against them.

Cooperation Agreement to Prevent Problem Gambling

In order to address the problem of problematic gambling, the IPLyC and Fundación Nexum signed a cooperation agreement in relation to prevention and education in this area.

Specifically, the initiative is aimed at increasing awareness regarding illegal gambling activities among the general public with the focus being placed on illegal online casinos.

The signing ceremony was attended by Gonzalo Atanasof and Pablo Carrera.

Interdisciplinary Approach to Prevention

It should be noted that this is not an isolated case. According to the representatives of the IPLyC, the organization has been trying to raise the issue of problem gambling before and collaborate with other institutions in order to prevent problems with gambling.

Thus, the current initiative represents a further step towards developing effective prevention measures.

As can be seen, the program is built according to an interdisciplinary concept which implies involving various stakeholders such as state agencies, families, education, health care, and justice.

Cooperative Response Is Needed

When discussing the importance of this cooperative initiative, regulators emphasized the necessity of a coordinated approach to addressing gambling issues.

Specifically, the agreement includes various activities aimed at developing preventive measures such as conducting awareness campaigns and training programs.

As noted above, such an approach is needed because early identification of problematic behavior is a complicated matter.

Undoubtedly, this initiative will have many positive implications. Thus, on one hand, by introducing electronic payment methods, the province will increase transparency and promote responsible gambling practices.

On the other hand, the decision to collaborate with NGOs shows that regulators are also concerned about the social consequences of problem gambling.
