Buenos Aires Cracks Down on Illegal Gambling Ads

The Lotería de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires (LOTBA) has intensified its battle against illegal online gaming. The city regulator said this week that it had delivered 24 additional legal notices to influencers supporting unapproved betting sites on social media thereby increasing the total number of people cautioned to over 100.

The change is part of a larger campaign to restrict the proliferation of clandestine gambling advertisements, which officials claim are fueling a rise in juvenile gambling addiction. The most recent project of LOTBA highlights a rising worry about the digital marketing tactics of these unlawful sites, which often go viral owing to the influence and reach of influencers.

Influencer Marketing Fuels Illegal Gambling Exposure

75% of the most recent cases, according to LOTBA, came from internal inquiries; the remainder was set off by public reports. Often drawing consumers with promises of welcome bonuses, rapid wins, and simple cashouts outside the scope of legal regulation, the targeted influencers have been advocating systems running without permission.

LOTBA said in its statement that teenagers are particularly susceptible to this kind of influence. The illegal promotion of gambling is especially worrying given the visibility and reach of public figures on social networks.

In several situations, these campaigns are disguised as lifestyle content, freebies, or instructions, so blurring the line for platforms or unwitting consumers to identify them. The boundary between organic recommendation and paid promotion is purposefully hazy; this technique further extends the reach and power of these illicit advertisements.

“We Won’t Let This Slide,” Warns LOTBA President

Jesús Acevedo, president of LOTBA, said emphatically that the results of encouraging unlawful gambling are real and grave: “Es fundamental que quienes los promocionan tomen conciencia de las consecuencias graves de promocionar juego clandestino. Vamos a continuar dando la batalla para fomentar el Juego Responsable y combatir la ludopatía infantil“.

How simply youngsters can access these sitesoften without age verification or identity verificationalarms authorities especially. Many of these sites hide their actual nature by using foreign domains, phony app listings, and deceptive marketing, hence breaking laws.

Illegal Platforms Taken Offline

Alongside the campaign against influencers, Buenos Aires officials also instructed the blocking of 72 newly illegal gambling websites. With 237 sites closed in one wave, September 2023 marks the second-most extensive takedown effort thus far.

Under Dr. Juan Rozas employing LOTBA data and evidence FEJA says these systems sometimes run via shell corporations, utilize mirror domains to avoid enforcement, and reappear with few alterations within days.

Devoted to cleaning up the digital gambling environment in Argentina, the regulator has blocked over 2,390 illegal betting sites since last year. Preservation of the integrity of the local gaming market and lowering the risks for susceptible consumers depend mostly on this, authorities say.

Why This is Important

The promotion of unregulated betting sites raises public health issues in addition to being a regulatory headache. Often associated with illicit activity, many of these services lack local taxes and do not adhere to responsible gaming rules. Users say issues such as unexpected downloads of malware or inability to withdraw money.

Influencers who engage in these advertisements, meanwhile, might suffer legal repercussions, including monetary fines and reputational loss. Argentine law prohibits the promotion of unlicensed gambling operations, and LOTBA has made it clear that enforcement will continue to escalate.

A Demand for Accountability

LOTBA has a straightforward message: Influencers and content artists have to be responsible for the companies and outlets they support. The regulator is also requesting that social media networks and app stores enhance their enforcement mechanisms and help to shield customers, notably minors.

Argentina is increasing enforcement given the still high and progressively sophisticated numbers of illicit operations. And with LOTBA in front, the age of unrestricted internet gambling advertising in Buenos Aires looks almost finished.
