A new law has been presented in the Argentine Province of Buenos Aires to introduce more severe regulations on licensed online gambling sites. The initiative would also include features such as mandatory session time limits, daily logins, and real-time facial recognition, among others, to enhance player protection.
It was introduced by Provincial Deputy Mayra Mendoza, given Argentina’s online gambling market is still expanding, especially after the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The bill would impact all seven operators already licensed by the Provincial Lottery and Casinos Institute (IPLyC): Bet365, Betano, Stake, Betsson, BetWarrior, Bplay, and Sports.bet.
The proposal aims to acknowledge the specific dangers of using the internet for gambling and to tackle the increasing issue of problematic gambling among teenagers and young adults.
Bill Introduces New Limits for Player Activity
The bill would, among other things, cap each gaming session at 60 minutes. After the time limit, the player’s account would be automatically closed, and the player would be unable to log in for a minimum of one hour until the next session.
The proposal also caps access by users on a 24-hour basis to three logins. If the daily limit is exceeded, then access will be denied until the next day and a responsible gambling message will be provided.
Other steps for responsible gambling might involve displaying elapsed playing time and total wagered amount on screen at all times, and requiring a player to make an alert to players when their behavior indicates a risk of a problem.
Biometric Verification and Stronger Regulatory Oversight
It will also necessitate real-time facial recognition for logging in, depositing cash, requesting withdrawals, and placing bets above a certain limit to ensure that a player’s identity is verified. The measure is designed to enhance identity verification and ward off unauthorised access, including by minors.
Violators of the proposed requirements may be subject to monetary fines, temporary license suspension, or revocation of operating authority.
The bill also establishes a Permanent Working and Monitoring Committee in the Buenos Aires Chamber of Deputies. The group will be in charge of enforcing this law and suggesting amendments that will be necessary for future legislation under the Committee on Gambling, Lottery, and Problem Gambling Prevention.
Broader Focus on Consumer Protection and Illegal Gambling
They will present the proposal, which Deputy Mayra Mendoza said will allow our regulations to adapt to new realities and address problematic online gambling from a comprehensive and citizen-centred perspective, while striving for a system of protection for those who are designed for hours and hours of use.
The Committee on Gambling, Lottery, and Problem Gambling Prevention also has a set of priorities for work in 2026. They range from banning minors from using betting sites, reinforcing online gambling identity verification via possible integration with the National Registry of Persons (RENAPER) from Argentina, combating illegal gambling websites (estimated at around 80% of betting platforms), and advertising rules that make it seem that having knowledge of a sport guarantees gambling success.
The bill will next go to the committee for review, which Micaela Olivetto chairs.
