The Associação de Bets e Fantasy Sport (ABFS), the main industry association for betting and fantasy sports operators in Brazil, has formally asked for the support of the Federal Government to approach major technology companies—Apple and Google—to consider allowing betting apps in their online platforms. The government was asked by officials in the Ministry of Finance, which deals with matters regarding Brazil’s regulated betting industry.
Now, Apple’s App Store and Google Play restrict betting apps in Brazil on both platforms, creating a barrier to licensed operators wishing to expand their online footprint. According to ABFS, government-assisted negotiations could turn the tide and propel the growth of the legal market.
Combating Illegal Operators with App Accessibility
One of the key arguments advanced by ABFS is that more access to betting apps through official digital stores would have a very severe dampening impact on the visibility and influence of unlicensed operators. Despite lacking the legal permission, many of these operators continue to dominate a large share of Brazil’s online betting activity.
By promoting official recognition and app store listing, the ABFS aims to make a safer and more regulated environment for users. For them, such a listing would be a major tool for the Brazilian government to limit access to illegal platforms by promoting legitimate alternatives that are more accessible and inherently safer due to app store security controls.
Current Restrictions on Betting Apps
At present, only horse racing-related bet apps and Caixa Econômica Federal lottery services are permitted in the Play Store by Google. Other betting-related apps are being blocked even when owned by companies with open business models or pending approval within the country’s emerging regulatory landscape. Apple also has similar limits.
This means that the majority of the legal or semi-legal bookmakers are only left with the use of their websites in delivering mobile applications, which is technically as well as trust-wise inconvenient for users. ABFS maintains that these hacks also lower user trust and make users vulnerable to security risks such as malware or phishing.
The Case for Digital Store Inclusion
Those hosted on official stores like Google Play and the Apple App Store receive rigorous security screening, with the end result being that consumers can be confident they are downloading secure, malware-free software.
