The Botswana Gambling Authority has recently received the ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems Certification from the Botswana Bureau of Standards (BOBS), marking a significant achievement in its efforts to uphold high standards in gaming regulation. This certification confirms that the Authority’s operations align with internationally recognized quality management practices.
During a special ceremony at the Authority’s headquarters in Gaborone, Marvin Thokozani Torto, the chairman, emphasized that this accomplishment reflects a strong commitment to corporate governance and regulatory excellence.
He noted that the certification demonstrates the alignment of the Authority’s systems, which encompass licensing, compliance, and responsible gambling, with global best practices.
“Our strategy is not just regulatory; it is developmental. Through new licensing initiatives like Limited Payout Machines (LPMs) and betting operations, we are on course to create over 2,000 permanent jobs and stimulate Botswana’s economic diversification,” Torto stated during the award ceremony held on Tuesday(Jun 22).
“It aligns with Botswana’s broader goal of building capable institutions underpinned by transparency, service excellence, and accountability,” he added.
Meeting Global Standards
ISO 9001:2015 stands as the most widely recognized quality management standard worldwide, providing a framework that helps organizations boost efficiency, enhance customer satisfaction, manage risks, and cultivate a culture of continuous improvement.
Professor Goemeone Mogomotsi, the Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Trade and Entrepreneurship, had priases for the Gambling Authority during the Tuesday ceremony. “It speaks volumes about your leadership, systems, and commitment to public service excellence,” he remarked, emphasizing that the certification is not just a piece of paper but a strategic management tool.
Mogomotsi noted that it strengthens institutions, enhances operational efficiency, and fosters a culture of ongoing improvement. He also highlighted that this accomplishment represents a cultural shift within the Authority, showcasing that Botswana’s public institutions can not only meet but exceed global standards.
“This milestone fits seamlessly into the government’s transformation agenda, which prioritizes digital modernization, public sector excellence, and the ease of doing business,” he added.
Mogomotsi also commended the Authority’s proactive stance on responsible gambling. He pointed to its community campaigns, school initiatives, and industry forums as clear evidence of its commitment to protecting vulnerable groups.
“As the gambling sector expands, this certification will help embed responsible gambling into operational practices, ensuring that the Gambling Authority’s regulatory mandate is carried out with rigor and compassion,” he stated.
‘An Honour’
Gambling Authority CEO Emolemo Kesitilwe was also present and hailed the certification as a pivotal achievement, highlighting that it elevates the organization beyond its standard regulatory responsibilities.
“We now operate based on defined processes, measurable outcomes, and continuous improvement mechanisms,” Kesitilwe explained.
With this new certification, the Gambling Authority can proudly display the BOBS: ISO 9001 certification flag at its headquarters and showcase the certification logo on its digital platforms, including its website and social media.
“It is an honour to officially hand over the ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System Certificate to the Gambling Authority. As you know, the Botswana Bureau of Standards (BOBS) is tasked with providing quality infrastructure services in Botswana, which include standardisation, metrology and conformity,” Botsile Kebapetse, BOBS’s Managing Director, stated.
