Botswana is taking steps to ensure responsible gambling remains the focus of its blossoming sector. As the casino market gains momentum, the country’s regulator is focused on protecting players while supporting economic growth.
With nine licensed casinos and a legal framework established by the Gambling Act of 2012, Botswana built one of Africa’s systematic land-based gambling systems. But as interest rises across the region, the Gambling Authority of Botswana is amplifying its efforts to keep the industry fair for all.
Educating the Public Through a National Campaign
Portia Diteko, Gambling Manager at the Gambling Authority, emphasised the urgency during a recent interview with SiGMA TV.
“Generating revenue for the country is important, but before that, human lives matter. We want to be able to keep our players safe.”
Through a national outreach effort, the Gambling Authority is educating citizens on the basics of responsible gambling. These sessions focus on skills-based learning, helping individuals understand warning signs of addictive behavior.
“They don’t know that you shouldn’t take your whole salary and gamble with it, They don’t know that school fees shouldn’t be used for gambling. So, we try to change that mindset,” Diteko said.
The campaign also includes access to free rehabilitation services. Players and their families can receive counselling and support to manage the effect of gambling-related harm.
Working With Operators to Promote Safer Gaming
One of the Authority’s key strategies is working with licensed operators. Diteko pointed out that partnership helps keep the industry healthy.
“We sit down with operators to make sure they understand we’re on the same side, If your players are safe, then the industry will be sustainable.”
She believes responsible gaming helps operators in the long run by maintaining trust and player loyalty.
“It actually works for the operators because it keeps their players coming back in a healthy way,” Diteko added.
The Authority is also handling the threat of illegal gambling. While the licensed market is well organized, unregulated land-based and online operations remain a challenge.
“We’ve seen operators complain that illegal sites are affecting their market share, These unlicensed entities aren’t paying taxes or levies. The players know where they play, We rely on the community to inform us when they see illegal machines or hear of unlicensed casinos,” she expressed.
Strong Legal Support Guides Future Strategy
Botswana’s Gambling Act of 2012 is central to its success. The law brought all gambling activities under one authority, creating a clearer path for enforcement and regulation. Portia Diteko gives credit to decisive political leadership for this advancement.
“One thing that has worked for us has been getting it right with the law, We have government buy-in. When we say, This law is not working; it’s not protecting our children or our players, they are willing to listen,” she said.
With clear laws and dedicated leadership, Botswana is showing how to grow a gaming industry without trading off public welfare. As the sector expands, responsible gambling remains at the heart of their strategy. Through community engagement, and strong regulation, the country is setting a positive example for others in the region.
