A decision given with the firm purpose of preserving public patrimonies and reinforcing the legality of regulated gaming in Colombia, the Bogotá Lottery and Coljuegos formalized an interinstitutional commitment through the so-called Pacto por la Legalidad. This commitment of the Bogota Lottery and Coljuegos is an inter-institutional pact aimed at stopping illicit gambling, enhancing controls, and ensuring that legal betting revenues continue to flow to the national health system.
Illegal gambling is a big headache for the country. For this year alone, the amount that was created by the clandestine operations is estimated at COP 1.5 billion, or around USD 391,000, creating a deficit that would have otherwise gone directly to very vital medical programs and public health services. The pact represents a renewed effort not only to stop the leaking of money from illegal gambling but also to ensure that legal operators can continue to contribute effectively to social investment.
A Coordinated Approach Supported by Major Institutions
This agreement is supported by the Bogotá Lottery, Coljuegos, the Attorney General’s Office, and licensed gaming operators. All these institutions look forward to increasing monitoring systems, investigations, and sanctions with the aim of completely taking down the networks involved in illegal gambling. These clandestine organizations normally use fraud, are not subject to any controls, and put citizens at risk.
