Enrique Razon Jr., head of Bloomberry Resorts and International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI), has overtaken real estate magnate Manny Villar to become the wealthiest person in the Philippines. Razon’s net value, according to Forbes Asia’s live billionaires list, is now at around $11.9 billion, just above Villar’s estimated net value of $11 billion.
This shift in ranking was initially reported by business news site Bilyonaryo.com and signifies a significant flip in the country’s wealth ranking.
What’s Behind the Change
The fortune of Razon has grown steadily, supported by strong financial results in his core industries. ICTSI, the country’s biggest port terminal operator, had its stock price surge 30 percent since March following a 14 percent increase in first-quarter net income to $239.54 million.
Bloomberry Resorts, which owns Solaire casino, increased 54 percent in share price, much boosted by a PHP2.9 billion ($49.8 million) one-time benefit associated with the refinancing of a PHP40 billion ($686.8 million) loan. The overall performance of the company was seen by strong growth in gaming as well as non-gaming revenues.
In addition, Razon also extended his presence in the energy sector through Prime Infra’s PHP50 billion ($857 million) May acquisition of a 60 percent interest in First Gen’s natural gas business, further diversifying his portfolio.
Villar’s Position and Challenges
Manny Villar, now the former top billionaire in the Philippines, lost significant net worth since April when Forbes put his net worth at $17.2 billion. His fortune has suffered not only from the suspension of stock trading but also from doubts on the part of market watchers regarding the sustainability and transparency of his company’s asset pricing.
Shares of Golden MV Holdings previously increased by over 456 percent following a land injection of PHP5.2 billion ($89.2 million) in 2024, but the recent incidents have cast a shadow on these gains.
Broader Implications and Outlook
This change in the Philippine billionaire list depicts the dynamic nature of turnover in wealth that is linked to business performance as well as regulatory compliance. Razon’s rise indicates the diversity and resilience of his interests in port operations, gaming, and energy sectors, which have shown robust growth and resilience.
As the country’s economic landscape continues to shift, such elite fortunes will also be looking to project corresponding underlying business health and governance. Both investors and observers will be closely watching just how both these figures and their businesses manage to navigate the coming threats and opportunities.
The reported statistics and recent events clearly reflect shifting fortunes among the Philippines’ elite businessmen, with Enrique Razon now standing at the top as the nation’s wealthiest individual.
