The largest iGaming and betting industry event in Latin America, BiS SiGMA South America, will once again welcome representatives of the industry and key stakeholders in Sao Paolo, from April 6 to 9. This year’s conference is expected to attract more than 18,500 delegates, over 400 exhibitors and sponsors, and have a programme including over 250 speakers.
Regarded as an important hub for doing business, innovation, and sharing knowledge, the conference will be attended by operators, tech providers, investors, regulators, media, and other professionals interested in discussing issues connected with the ever-changing face of the gaming industry.
Land-Based Casinos Back in the Spotlight
One of the hottest topics this year concerns the future of land-based casinos in Brazil. Four panels devoted to the subject will be held on April 8 during the Itaim stage.
The new interest emerges in connection with the ongoing legal process related to the question of whether or not the ban on gambling implemented in the form of the Criminal Misdemeanors Law of 1941 is in line with the Constitution of Brazil, adopted in 1988. The case Extraordinary Appeal RE 966177 has been accepted with broad repercussions and is scheduled to be discussed on April 23.
International Models and Local Adaptation
The first of the aforementioned panels is titled “Land-based casinos in Brazil: From Proposal to Practice. How to Create a Safe and Economically Viable Regulatory Framework?” In a way, the issue becomes relevant to discuss due to the fact that Bill No. 2,234/2022, aimed at legalizing casinos in Brazil, has finally become ready for a vote in the Senate after more than three decades of debates.
Another discussion to be held during the conference is called “International Overview of Indigenous Partnerships in the Casino Industry and Perspectives for Brazil”. The panel will consider examples of cooperation between indigenous nations and gaming operators around the world, examining models of such interaction, issues connected with governance, revenue-sharing, cultural protection, legal compliance, and sustainability of operations.
The third and last panel on this topic, entitled “Physical or Digital? Between Boundaries and Convergences in the Casino Industry,” focuses on land-based casinos that have begun to operate within the interconnected ecosystem, drawing on elements from both the digital and physical worlds.
Among the issues considered within the scope of the session are models of such operations, regulatory issues, customer protection, data analytics, taxation, and others.
A Market at a Turning Point
It goes without saying that the inclusion of the discussed themes in the agenda of the upcoming BiS SiGMA is indicative of a turning point in the development of the Brazilian gaming industry. With the legal process being carried out both at the legislative and judicial levels, the game-changing year seems to be around the corner.
