In light of a recent directive from the National Gambling Board (NGB), Betway has issued a response regarding the legality of online casino-style games.
This comes after a ruling from the Supreme Court of Appeal in Gauteng, which deemed that an operator providing online casino games had acted unlawfully under provincial gambling laws.
“The recent Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) ruling was a narrow interpretation of the Gauteng Gambling Act and does not amount to a ban on online betting,” said a Betway spokesperson.
“We remain committed to working with regulators and government to ensure a clear, responsible, and well-regulated betting environment in South Africa.”
The NGB emphasized that the ruling applies to all bookmakers nationwide, with Acting CEO Lungile Dukwana stressing the need for provincial licensing authorities to enforce compliance and take prompt action when necessary.
However, Betway argues that the ruling is specific to Gauteng and does not impose a nationwide ban on online casino-style betting. The operator has stated that it has no plans to withdraw its online casino offerings at this time and has not commented on any potential legal challenges.
