The betting scene in Botswana has just marked a major milestone. Bet267 launched this Thursday in Mogoditshane, with the Gambling Authority fully behind the move. This operator seeks to create a more secure and inclusive gambling industry within the country.
Addressing media, stakeholders, and industry leaders, the Authority’s CEO, Emolemo Peter Kesitilwe, described the launch as more than a business opening. According to him, this is a shift towards technologically advanced and responsible gambling.
“We welcome Bet267 as a partner in shaping a market that protects consumers and promotes economic growth,” said Kesitilwe.
A Huge Market, But Only 40% Of The Population Use Regulated Platforms
Botswana’s gambling market is growing fast, but there’s a catch. While an estimated 550,000 Batswana actively place bets, only 40% of the population are using licensed local operators. The rest are gambling through unregulated channels, putting themselves at risk while bleeding potential revenue out of the national economy.
To paint a clearer picture, Kesitilwe highlighted figures from March 2025. In one month, players staked a total of P150 million, resulting in P15 million in gross gambling revenue. If this trend holds, the country could pull in P180 million in annual GGR from just 40% of its active gamblers.
“If we close that gap. Botswana’s GGR could easily exceed P450 million annually,” he added.
Sweeping Reforms and a Focus on Local Impact
To close the gap and boost compliance, the Gambling Authority is pushing for significant policy changes. These include amendments to the Gambling Act of 2012, a full review of the 2002 Gambling Policy, and lowering the legal gambling age from 21 to 18. The reforms also aim to strengthen digital gambling regulation, and crack down on anti-money laundering practices to ensure a safer ecosystem.
Beyond policy, Bet267 is already making moves on the ground. The company has employed eight staff at its Mogoditshane site, seven of whom are women. Furthermore, plans are in place to scale to 26 local jobs and over 109 positions countrywide, with sites opening in Palapye, Gaborone, and Letlhakane.
Kesitilwe also praised Bet267’s focus on corporate social responsibility, highlighting its commitment to community development in Mogoditshane.
“Whether it’s through education, health, or youth programs, these initiatives show that responsible gambling can be a force for good,” he said.
Eyes on the Region, But Feet on the Ground
The Authority is looking beyond Botswana to regional success stories like South Africa, where the gambling sector pulls in around P30 billion in annual GGR. With a population of over 6 million active gamblers, South Africa has proven what’s possible with strong regulations and operator partnerships.
Kesitilwe believes Botswana can follow suit if reforms are backed by serious enforcement and a shared vision among stakeholders.
“We are not just regulating. We are rebuilding a smarter, safer, and more sustainable industry,” he stated, before officially declaring Bet267 Botswana open for business.
As Botswana develops its gambling industry, the launch of more reliable operators will be key to ensuring a responsible environment providing real value to players in the nation.
