Bangladesh has intensified its fight against illegal gambling promotions as the government begins removing websites linked to betting content.
The Bangladesh gambling advertising ban entered a new phase this week, following an order from Telecommunications and ICT Minister Faiz Ahmed Taiyeb.
Authorities confirmed that any site running or linking to betting material will be shut down without prior notice.
Over 1,300 illegal gambling links identified
Regulators are targeting betting networks tied to digital payments and unlicensed accounts.
During a briefing at the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) in Dhaka, Taiyeb reported that over 1,330 illegal links had been identified and removed using advanced web-crawling tools. These systems are now being used to track connections between mobile payment services and gambling platforms.
Taiyeb said that multiple warnings had been issued to media outlets still hosting gambling advertisements. He stated:
“Almost all media outlets are still actively participating in unsafe content and gambling advertisements, because they earn money from them. Multiple notices have already been issued. There will be no further public notice — we will simply close them. These sites must be shut down.”
Telecommunications firms ordered to enforce gambling ad ban
Network operators are now expected to play a direct role in enforcement.
The Bangladesh gambling advertising ban requires broadband and mobile providers to detect and remove unlicensed content. The Ministry said that closer cooperation with service providers will help prevent financial exploitation and reduce public exposure to illegal betting promotions.
Officials noted that the initiative aims to rebuild trust in Bangladesh’s digital infrastructure while ensuring compliance with national regulations.
Cyber Security Ordinance drives wider crackdown
The crackdown forms part of a larger campaign to control online gambling nationwide.
The government’s Cyber Security Ordinance 2025 has given regulators the authority to monitor and prosecute gambling-related activity in real time. It also supports the zero-tolerance policy on online gambling, introduced earlier this month.
This policy marks a turning point for Bangladesh’s digital economy as authorities balance technological growth with tighter control of online risk.
