Bangladesh Bank tightens grip on online gambling payments via mobile services

The quiet hum of Bangladesh’s mobile money network is changing tone.

In a move that signals growing tension between digital innovation and financial control, the Bangladesh Bank has ordered all mobile financial service (MFS) providers to block payments connected to online gambling. What began as a small compliance update has turned into a nationwide test of how far regulators can go to protect consumers without slowing the digital revolution.

A country-wide order lands on 13 operators

Thirteen MFS providers, the lifeblood of Bangladesh’s cashless economy, received official letters from the central bank this week. The message was clear: gambling-related transactions must stop immediately.

The instruction, issued at the request of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Division, demands that every operator identify, monitor, and report accounts suspected of processing gambling payments. Companies are now required to build dedicated task forces to track and block these transactions before they ever reach the end user.

It’s a bold move for a country where digital wallets have become a daily tool for millions. But the regulator insists it’s necessary to curb what it calls a growing “shadow economy” powered by online betting platforms.

Technology becomes both the problem and the solution

In a twist of irony, the same technology that made digital finance accessible is now being enlisted to fight its darker side.

Bangladesh Bank has ordered providers to deploy AI-driven systems capable of detecting suspicious patterns in real time. These systems will scan transaction data, flag potential gambling payments, and feed reports directly into the central bank’s compliance portal.

Operators must also introduce public-facing reporting tools, including a helpline and online form where citizens can file gambling-related complaints. The move opens the door for what officials describe as “shared surveillance”, where users themselves can help regulators monitor the digital ecosystem.

A tightening circle around illicit finance

This isn’t the first time Bangladesh Bank has taken aim at unregulated digital payments, but this campaign marks a turning point in scale and ambition.

A high-level review meeting with seven major MFS providers has already been scheduled to assess how well current systems can handle these new demands. Regulators will examine each operator’s risk controls, AI adoption readiness, and data-sharing protocols to see whether the tools in place are enough to keep illegal funds out.

Officials believe this effort will also strengthen Bangladesh’s position under global anti-money-laundering (AML) standards, particularly those set by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

Yet, within the industry, the shift is prompting difficult conversations. Can innovation and control truly coexist when every transaction is under the microscope?

The future of digital finance in Bangladesh

Bangladesh’s digital payment revolution has been a remarkable success story. With over 100 million registered accounts, MFS platforms have transformed how people pay bills, send remittances, and run small businesses. But as the network grows, so do the risks, from unlicensed lending apps to offshore gambling portals tapping into local wallets.

The central bank’s latest directive is a message that the era of unchecked digital finance is coming to an end. The new system may bring transparency and accountability, but it will also test how adaptable the ecosystem truly is.

Will Bangladesh’s mobile finance boom continue to thrive under tighter scrutiny, or will regulation slow its rapid ascent?
