Bain Capital, an international investment firm, has formally taken operational control of the Inspire Entertainment Resort in Incheon, Korea. The action follows Mohegan, which originally owned and managed the resort, ramped up debt after its financial problems since the resort went into business.
The resort, initially known as Mohegan Inspire Entertainment Resort, soft-opened on November 30, 2023, and later grand-opened on March 5, 2024. But financial constraints at Mohegan raised questions regarding the long-term viability of its involvement in the venture.
A representative of Bain Capital stressed the firm’s pledge to the long-term viability of the resort by stating: “This transition underscores Bain Capital’s commitment to strengthening Inspire’s position as a leading entertainment destination in Asia. We will continue to drive enhancements that will bolster its competitive standing.”
Despite the change in management operation, Bain Capital has given assurances to the stakeholders that the change would in no way affect the day-to-day experience of employees, guests, and business operation. The present management would still be intact, in collaboration with Bain Capital, to guarantee business continuity along with strategic improvements.
These words were echoed by a spokesperson for Inspire Entertainment Resort, citing Inspire and Bain Capital’s long history: “Bain Capital has been a key driver of Inspire’s growth since the beginning. We believe this transition will cement our partnership and drive the resort’s growth.”
Mohegan addressed its fiscal status within its Feb. 14 Q1 report, citing concerns over whether it would be able to refinance debt outstanding. The company stated it was unlikely to have sufficient liquidity to fund the terms of the Korea Credit Facility without refinancing. Mohegan also mentioned up to $100 million more in additional financial commitments under a credit enhancement support agreement, placing its assets further into pressure.
As Mohegan itself reported a 71.2% year-to-year increase in international resort revenue, to $135.7 million from $79.3 million, its net loss increased by 3% to -$33.9 million too. Within hours of those numbers becoming public, Bain Capital exercised the acceleration rights on the debt, a move that apparently caught Mohegan’s management off guard.
On its earnings call, Mohegan CFO Ari Glazer reported this turn of events as follows: “A few days following our earnings report, we heard the lenders in MGE Korea Ltd. accelerated HoldCo debt. Bain Capital, as senior lender, took certain actions, such as seizure of MGE Korea Ltd. shares. We’re looking at whether these things were legal or not and pondering our options.”
Despite Mohegan’s general financial troubles, the company had posted record yearly revenue for FY24, a 13% increase bringing overall revenue to $1.9 billion. However, the company’s mounting debt concerns have now put the operational reins of Inspire Entertainment Resort in Bain Capital’s hands, ushering in a new era for the upscale resort.
