Argentina has placed a nationwide ban on the operation of the online betting platform known as Polymarket, which is based on the concept of prediction markets. This has been done after the relevant authorities determined that the platform had been operating without the required authorization in any part of the country.
The move has been initiated after the Buenos Aires City Lottery (LOTBA) lodged a complaint regarding the operations of the platform. The relevant authorities initiated an investigation into the operations of the platform.
Nationwide Ban Following Judicial Order
The move has been initiated as per the claims of the LOTBA after Judge Susana Parada, the head of the PCyF No. 31 court, issued a judicial order for the blocking of the platform throughout the country.
With this move, Argentina has become the first country in Latin America to impose a restriction on the operation of a prediction market platform.
The relevant investigation has been conducted by the technical team of the LOTBA and the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Gambling (FEJA) headed by prosecutor Juan Rozas.
The Director of the LOTBA, Ezequiel Domínguez, has explained the move by saying that the initiative for the same had been taken by the internal detection mechanism. “The initial identification was carried out by our technical teams, which led to a formal investigation and ultimately a judicial decision.”
Institutional Coordination Behind the Measure
The relevant authorities have highlighted the institutional coordination that has been brought into the enforcement of the ban.
The Association of State Lotteries of Argentina (ALEA), headed by Ida Lopez, has confirmed that the platform had not been granted the required legal authorization for the operation of the platform. The move has been aided by the Argentine Chamber of Casinos, Bingos, and Annex Halls.
Consequently, the website and applications associated with the operations of Polymarket have been restricted nationwide.
Regulatory Concerns Over Platform Operations
There were several concerns that the regulators had about the platform’s operating model. Among the key concerns were the lack of proper age and identity verification checks, the ability to transact using cryptocurrencies as well as credit cards, and the ease with which users can create an account without proper verification checks.
These were key concerns as they were seen as major risks in terms of consumer protection and regulatory compliance.
How Prediction Markets Work
Polymarket operates as a prediction market platform, where users can place bets on the outcomes of future events.
Unlike traditional sportsbooks, where the oddsmaking is performed by the sportsbook itself, in a prediction market platform, the prices are driven by user behavior. The platform is designed in a way that allows users to pose questions about future events and allows them to purchase shares in relation to those questions.
The value of the shares is based on the supply and demand for those shares, which essentially means the probability assigned to those outcomes based on user behavior.
Additionally, the platform also utilizes blockchain technology and allows users to make payments using cryptocurrencies, thus making it accessible to users across the globe. The Argentine decision is an indication of the increasing regulatory scrutiny faced by emerging betting models.
