Macau has posted its strongest month of gaming revenue since the pandemic, with August 2025 bringing in MOP22.16bn (US$2.76bn).
August marked a milestone for Macau’s casinos. The figure was 12.2% higher than the MOP19.75bn recorded in August 2024, underlining how the city’s recovery has taken hold across the mid-year period.
A closer look at August
The August total of MOP22.16bn capped a run of solid months that started in early summer. After a cautious start to the year, Macau’s casinos entered the second half of 2025 with more momentum.
The Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ), which published the figures, noted that August was the single best month since Covid-19 restrictions began in 2020. That performance helped lift the overall revenue picture for the first eight months of 2025.
Year-to-date performance
Between January and August, Macau generated MOP163.05bn in gross gaming revenue (GGR). That was up 7.2% year-on-year compared with the MOP152.10bn collected in the same period in 2024.
The monthly breakdown shows how the year unfolded:
- January began with a decline, falling 5.6% year-on-year to MOP18.25bn.
- February rebounded to MOP19.74bn, up 6.8%, helped by the Lunar New Year holiday.
- March stayed stable at MOP19.66bn, edging up 0.8%.
- April climbed slightly to MOP18.86bn, a 1.7% gain.
- May brought stronger growth, with MOP21.19bn, up 5%.
- June surged to MOP21.06bn, rising 19% year-on-year.
- July matched June’s pace, also up 19% at MOP22.13bn.
- August closed the run at MOP22.16bn, a 12.2% increase.
The most notable jumps came in June and July, which both grew nearly a fifth compared with 2024. Those months provided the biggest lift to the cumulative total, offsetting the slower start in January.
Nevada’s July results
While Macau was reporting its August numbers, Nevada also shared its July figures. The state’s casinos took in US$1.36bn in gaming revenue, up 4% compared with July 2024.
Most of the revenue came from Clark County, home to Las Vegas, which generated almost US$1.2bn, a 3.2% increase. The Las Vegas Strip contributed US$749.1m, a rise of 5.6%.
Baccarat was a standout, with revenue climbing 79% to US$114.5m during the month.
Broader picture
Macau’s growth in August is an encouraging sign for the territory’s recovery. Tourism numbers have helped sustain casino activity, while strong summer months showed that international demand remains resilient.
Yet challenges remain. Local consumer confidence has been slow to improve, and property prices in Macau have continued to lag behind gaming and tourism. That has left the recovery somewhat uneven across the wider economy.
Still, the return of high revenue months is a boost for operators and investors watching Macau’s trajectory. With August marking the highest monthly total since Covid-19, all eyes will now turn to the year’s closing quarter to see if the momentum can hold.
