A locked basement in a residential building in Volochysk, Khmelnytskyi region, was being used as an illegal gambling venue, Ukrainian police say. The alleged organiser was a 63-year-old local woman.
The operation was concealed behind an otherwise unremarkable entrance. Access was restricted, with only selected visitors apparently allowed inside.
When investigators entered, they found an administrator and one customer. Inside were computers containing gambling software, additional equipment, surveillance cameras, mobile phones and bank cards.
The discovery points to a gambling operation that was more organised than the setting might suggest.
Cash Found at the Woman’s Home
The largest amount of money was not found in the basement.
During a separate search of the alleged organiser’s home, investigators seized more than 400,000 Ukrainian hryvnias. They also recovered handwritten notes that police believe could be connected to the operation.
The equipment and records were taken for further investigation.
Authorities have notified the woman that she is suspected of violating Part 1 of Article 203-2 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code, which covers the illegal organisation or operation of gambling and lotteries.
The case is still under investigation. Police are working to establish how the venue operated and whether other people were involved.
The investigation will also determine the significance of the seized notes, equipment and money.
For now, the allegations remain subject to the ongoing criminal proceedings.
