A single wager worth roughly $409,000 has pushed one of Polymarket’s political contracts back into the spotlight, even as there is no evidence that Russian President Vladimir Putin is close to leaving office.
The position was placed by a Polymarket account known as ZnotluvuiSamez, which has built a history of making large bets tied to the war in Ukraine. The account, which displays a Ukrainian flag as its profile image, is betting on Putin no longer being Russia’s president by December 31, 2026.
The size of the stake stands out. Prediction market contracts regularly attract speculation, but positions of this scale are uncommon enough to trigger wider discussion across the platform. Despite the attention, the market itself still prices the outcome as relatively unlikely, with participants assigning it around an 11% probability.
Big Bets Do Not Equal Inside Knowledge
The contract has fueled speculation online, but the wager alone offers little reason to believe a change in the Kremlin is imminent.
Putin is not scheduled to face another presidential election for several years, making any near-term departure difficult to interpret through market pricing alone. Large trades can reflect strong personal convictions, attempts to influence market sentiment, or simple risk-taking rather than privileged information.
That distinction matters because prediction markets have repeatedly faced questions over whether traders with nonpublic information can influence contracts tied to politics, conflict, and major world events.
Ukraine War Keeps Political Markets Active
The renewed interest in the contract also comes as Ukraine has intensified drone strikes targeting Moscow, adding another layer of uncertainty around the conflict.
Former US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has recently argued that Putin appears to be under growing pressure from the war while suggesting Russia is still likely to resist calls for a ceasefire. Those broader geopolitical developments have helped draw additional attention to political prediction markets, where traders frequently react to military and diplomatic events in real time.
Even so, the available evidence does not support claims that Putin is on the verge of losing power.
Past controversies have shown why caution is warranted. Prediction markets, including Polymarket and Kalshi, have previously faced scrutiny after cases involving traders accused of using nonpublic information. One widely discussed example involved a US Special Forces soldier who was charged after placing bets linked to events in Venezuela.
For now, the unusually large wager appears to reflect speculation rather than proof of an impending political shift in Russia.
